just finished a book about the people of North Platte who ran a canteen manned and supplied by surrounding communities. they met and fed every on of the troop trains who went thru there during WW II, sometimes feeding 7,000 boys in a day. they used their own food and ration stamps and had a profound effect on the boys who stopped . really touching book, I wonder if my father or my uncles went thru North Platte ?
Patricia, do you know the title of the book? It sounds very interesting, and my husband was born in Lexington but raised in North Platte and some of the surrounding area, so there he might be interested.
once upon a time is the title, it's a great story and says so much about the spirit of those midwestern people who gave up their own food and rations to feed troops rolling thru their town
