I've enjoyed the activity where kids are given a saying familiar to adults and and they end it themselves. Such as; You can lead a horse to water ______________ (but why?)

I thought maybe the Reading room would be a reasonable place to share a similar type of activity. It is called a paraprosdokian, the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected and makes you reinterpret the first part.

Examples;
I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather, not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.

Do not argue with and idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Have you heard any of these or want to invent your own?

Susan

Okay, so I have said that I've been, "Happy as a clam!" quite often around my kids, and my littlest one - now 4 - popped out with "Mom! I'm going to run fast as a clam! Watch me!" before he took off across the yard. Who knew clams were so fast?!?!?!

XOXO, Libbie

Here are a few more.

The voices in your head my not be real, but they have some good ideas!

Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the streed with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy.

There's a fine line between cuddling and holding someone down so they can't get away.

Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

My favorite saying is: "I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but they tell me I AM user friendly!"

God gave us two hands... one to help ourselves, and one to help others!

Susan,

Love reading your paraprosdokians especially "There's a fine line between cuddling and holding someone down so they can't get away." I had to laugh because when my twin and I were little we used to hate it when our sister-in-law hugged us because it was like being smothered and we couldn't get away!

Anne,
Don't you just love those things kids say? You really need to write down "fast as a clam" and share it with your son when he's a new daddy himself.
Nini,
I've heard variations on that one but really enjoyed yours the most.

Judy,
How much fun that you had a personal connection to that one! Yep, there can a lot of truth in a few words.

Its funny how much truth there can be in a string of a few words. Or how a twist in the middle can really get you to think.

Here are a few more.

Never do anything you wouldn’t want to explain to the paramedics.

A friend is someone who thinks you’re a good egg even though you’re slightly cracked.

Some of my favorites are attributed to Grouch Marx;

"I've had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn't it." —Groucho Marx

"Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.” — Groucho Marx

"I once shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas I don't know." — Groucho Marx

"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." — Groucho Marx

Keep smiling, and keep thinking.

Okay, here's a variation on the "sharpest tool in the shed" one. This was said in all seriousness by a friend of ours who is NOTORIOUS for these.

"Well, I may not be the sharpest cookie in the box....." Hee hee heee!!!!

Love this thingamajiggie paraprosdokian thread!!! My daughter and I claim to have a rare form of dyslexia because we do this with sayings by accident. A few years back we agreed to stay away from sayings because of our surprise endings, a mix and match game that came out of nowhere. Calling it SOMETHING sure has given us permission to let loose our rare "talent!?"

"Church isn't out till we quit singing, there's another inning to go."

Libbie, how about this? Meggie said once, "Well, I'm not the smartest knife in the drawer."

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?
