The thread on cast-iron cookware (and subsequent mention of CI trivets) made me wonder about this...
What do you guys use for trivets on your suppertable? Homemade or "boughten"? I've used everything from knitted pads from surplus yarn, to neatly folded dishtowels, to cedarwood circles, to ceramic trivets I was given as a gift. I'm looking for cast-iron trivets but haven't found any thus far (not looked hard enough I'm sure). What about ya'll??

Am I a bad person to admit that it would be ANYTHING I can grab at the moment?? I have a set of nice, handmade wooden trivets that I got as a wedding present back in the 70's and I have several ceramic ones, but for some reason I just grab the nearest hotpad, dish towel or folded washcloth I can. I've even been known to grab a magazine if it's handy. I guess I should be ashamed. :-)

I hoping to start a cast iron trivit collection after I'm satisfies with my CI cookware stash. Right now I use two potholders that are too stiff to actually use for lifting pots. I also have a mystery metal shield that my grandmother bought for me at an antique shop. It's in the narrow side so I only use it for smaller dishes since it's hard to balance larger items.
I've been know to use cooling racks and the burners on my stove, too.
If I were to use a CI trivet, do I need to put something underneath it?

my favorite is one of my mother's. She had a set of 3. They are either rattan or wicker. Circular, and wrapped round and round, with a wrap of green or red reed here and there. I remember them since 1953. She probably had them longer. It just reminds me of home everytime I use it which is often.

I've got some rounds of cork from IKEA that I like. They are big enough to fit most pots and don't really get hot to the touch. I also have some flat ceramic ones I made in high school art class. :)
If you want cast iron ones Kmart and Target sometimes have them, but I think the best place to look is at thrift stores!

I am a "grab whatever is handy" gal. Usually this is just a folded dishtowel. I think that I have about 2 potholders so I am usually using them to hang on to whatever I am taking to the table. But now I may start looking into finding some nice trivets to have handy.

I use my Shaker cooling wracks--I have about 5 different sizes. Works beautifully and they're pretty by themselves.

We use potholders at the regular supper table - I have some old embroidery covered trivets I bust out if there is company, not often that happens:)

I have about 6 TEAPOT iron trivets that I use all the time and I love them. Some times I will use a pot holder in a pinch, but prefer my iron Teapots..

I have a trivet made out of wood someone bought me in Costa Rica. I have no idea what kind of wood it is but it's so pretty. However, if I don't have that handy I grab a dish towel!
