Flat Stanley thinks I am nuts! As an adult a pen pal and I had traveling small teddy bears who went on sleepovers at eachothers house - I will never grow up, I refuse to!

Well speaking for myself I won't be adding anything here that would make and sense, but look forward to what you all come up with. The best I can come up with are the roses are red violets are blue sing songs. not pretty good.

Okay, I'll start this out.
This is a little poem for children from ages 4 to 8 about what to do if you are bored at the start of summer. I thought it would be an appropriate way to start out summer. It is G rated and if you want to read it to your littlies, that is just fine by me. This is not a final draft, but I hope ya'll enjoy it just the same. This poem/story was inspired by summers my sister and I spent making this very stew! Please let me know how you like it.

Aunt George

Dandelion Stew

The first day of summer and I’m all alone.
No friends, no fun, no calls on the phone.

Mom says, “Go out! Go play! Go run!”
But how can I do that when I only make one?

So I picked up my hat and trudged out the door.
I sat on the porch and stared at the floor.

“Mom!” I yelled. “There’s nothing to do.”
She yelled back at me, “Make something to do!”

“Here is a pot and a spoon or two.
“Now go find some dandelions and stir up some stew.”

Harumph, phateew
“Dandelion stew?”

I sat on the ground.
I stared in my pot.

I wondered what dandelions
Tasted like hot.

So I picked one or two
For my dandelion stew.

Then picked three or four
And then I found more.

“What ‘ya doin’?”
Came a voice from the tree.

I looked up.
A kid looked down at me.

“I’m making some stew,
In this big old pot.”

“Wanna help?” I said
It’ll hold a lot.”

“Sure,” came the voice,
“Nothin’ better to do.”

So my one became two!
For dandelion stew.

“How do you make it?”
“I really don’t know.

Let’s fill up the pot,
And stir it just so.”

So we picked and plopped
Yellow buds in our pot.

Then poured in hose water
The sun had made hot.

We stirred and we stirred,
But the stew needed more.

We threw in a shriveled
Brown crabapple core.

“What ya doin’?”
Sang a voice from behind us.

“Making dandelion stew.
You wanna join us?”

“Sure, said the voice.
“Nothin’ better to do.”

So our two became three.
Him, her and me.

“How about some rocks
In that dandelion stew?

I have some in my pocket,
I can spare one or two.”

So our new friend reached deep
In his pockets and found,

Two rocks, four bottle caps
A stick with some string he had wound.

In the pot he plunked
His pocketed stash.

Then we seasoned it well,
With some sand...just a dash.

We stirred and tossed in
Some dirt and some grass,

And twenty-two pebbles
As shiny as glass.

“Can I help you please?”
A fourth voice inquired.

“I’ll stir that pot,
If you three are tired!”

So our three became four.
Then up hopped four more.

We all took a leaf,
And made our own plate.

I dished up the stew,
Not one helping, but eight!

After the dandelion stew
Was all gone.

We got out a kickball
And played on the lawn.

Two teams of four, are much better than one
Sitting alone on a porch in the sun.

This really is a magical brew.
This stuff in the pot...

This dandelion stew!

The Faerie Dance

With the tinkling of the wind chimes
the faeries come to call,
their sprightly song enchants me
as the forest to me calls.
As I peek around a corner,
with delight my eyes do see
the tiny faeries hand in hand
in a dance beneath the trees.
Their garments are but gossamer,
they cast a sparkling light
their faces small and innocent
they fill me with delight.
I watch them frolic this May day
to usher in the spring
and in my heart my faeries live
for just my eyes to see.

This is not a nature poem, but it is one of my published ones.

Some Silent Winter

Some silent winter
you'll call out to me,
but the only thing catching your breath,
will be the stark winter's air.

It'll be too late,
to pull me back inside;
too late to take a second look
a second chance.

You can't marry her,
I still love you,
but you never gave me the chance
to show you.

Some turbulent fall
you'll be caught
in the fury of your feelings,
unable to escape.

Screaming will offer no repose
only add to your misery,
your maze of quickened hope,
extinguished by your own words.

Wow Kathy,
Marvelous! I love both of them. You are so very talented. Some Silent Winter has such bold depth to it. When I read it I felt strong emotions icey desolation, pain, anger yet also a release of these and a new beginning a letting go at the end. Your choice of words really brought that out: fury, screaming, misery, maze of quickened hope. Great job.

Your fairy poem made me want to look for a fairy ring and start dancing! Loved it!!

Some Silent Winter is actually a part of a book (not yet published) I have written about one particular man I loved so dearly - it is called A Collection of Fridays - and perhaps I should submit it someplace. If you don't mind that it is not nature or farm poetry - I would love to share some of them with you. That particular book of poems is closest to my very heart.
I also have a wonderfull Halloween Invocation/Poem that I use yearly - it is nice and gives me a feeling of closeness to those that have passed over.
Thanks guys - for all of your encouragement.

Since we are on the topic of fathers, I wrote this little poem when one of my nephews was faced with having to be a single dad to a son. My nephew is a great dad. But he never had his dad to teach him these things. My Dad taught us these things and he also taught his grandkids these things. Just some thoughts behind the inspiration. Once again: G rated, since I usually write for children. Happy Father's day!

My Daddy (For C5)

My daddy taught me how to fish and how to bait a hook.
He taught me names of presidents and how to read a book.
He took me for my first haircut and swinging in the park
He scared away the spooky things that came out after dark.

My daddy taught me how to swim and how to throw a ball
He taught me how to dress myself and how to stand up tall.
He showed me how to boil an egg and spread jam on my bread.
He kissed me every night before he tucked me in to bed.

My daddy taught me how to climb and how to dig in sand.
He taught me it’s ok to cry and how to shake a hand.
He showed me how to pitch a ball and took me to the gym.
He’s taught me how to be a daddy, someday, just like him.

I was thinking about my mother one windy clear blue sky day while hanging out the laundry and this poem came to me:

Listen to the Wind

Listen to the wind, as jets go flying by.
Leaving trails like silver snails, across the clear blue sky.

Listen to the wind, as it rustles through the leaves.
And swirls them up into the air, and sets them down with ease.

Listen to the wind, as it whispers through your hair,
And tells you all the secrets of the clouds up in the air.

Listen to the wind, as it whips and snaps your sheet,
That your mother washed and hung to dry to make your bed smell sweet.

Listen to the wind, as it whistles through the screen,
And billows out your curtains, making clouds of white whipped cream.

Listen to the wind, as it takes you by the hand.
And carries you, my little love, off to slumber land.
*********************************************************************

I LOVE to write poetry about the seasons, smells, nature. Highlights for Children has bought 4 of my poems so far. I can't share them here since I have already sold rights to them for those particular ones. But I am happy to have someone read my work rather than let it languish in my files!

I really hope you enjoy these.

Yes, Nancy, I've been published. I'm definately not famous though! *g* Don't I wish. I write for children, have been in Highlights many times and they have about 5 more of my stories, rebuses and poems purchased and just waiting for the right issue. They bought alot of winter and snow poems out of my stock of poetry. I have written a novel which was purchased, but then the publishing house decided to return all rights and close their doors. Ouch, that reallllly hurt, especially since they had my picture book, already illustrated and ready to go to Hong Kong for printing. I have one of the illustrations in my files...it is sensational. My illustrator has done about 5 picture books.....big sigh.......that is the world of children's publishing though. Tough as nails and lots of rejections. A friend of mine is writing paranormal romance and is hitting it big...she has encouraged me to write it, but my heart is in writing for children, home and hearth. Another big sigh.........I think a farmgirl poetry section in her next book would be fabulous. I've also been in Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul, Black Belt Times, McGraw-Hill, Harcourt Brace and Steck-Vaughn Bennert have all bought my work for educational publishing...those I may never see in print since they use them in leveled reading programs and who knows where they are now! LOL.......tough business.

But, I still love to write for my own and my children's enjoyment, and hopefully some of my writing will bring a few smiles here too! So glad you are enjoying it. I'll post the illustration from my picture book on my blog sometime today if you would like to see it. I have a few Halloween ones too. Some Thanksgiving stories and fishing stories and lots of grandma stories. My daughters are always asking to hear stories from my childhood, so I have been doing semi-autobiographical stories of small events when I was a child. I really need to start submitting my work again........sorry, here I go babbling along again. Shut me up!!

Thanks again,
Georgann

Wow, I almost know a famous person. That is really great. What Name do you use, Aunt George? Well like I said your sure have the talent. Of course I will be over reading your blog, check it all the time. You made me get out some bias tape and I 'am going to try and sew it around an old half apron I have, just to see if I can make it look right. When you sew rick rack do you sew right on the rick or rack or down the middle? Might try that too. See you are getting me all wound up. BREATH BREATH, I'am ok now.

Still

The pages of my poetry
still bare marks of wetness
where once the rain fell on its pages,
or was it my tears?
I read the words I'd written
to see if any truth still lies there.
After all the time that has passed
the truth still shines through.
When I said I'd love you forever
I find that I still do.

There are times, in the longness of the day,
when the weather is strange and reminicing
that I still miss you.
I wonder on those days
if I saw you
would you still feel the thrill
you used to fill my heart with?
Sometimes I think it would be more
intense than ever,
that I'd have to grab that single chance
to love you
and let you go - forever...
and savor you in the solitude
I'd have to keep.

It's funny in looking back
that the pain is mellow now.
My memories are often filled with joy,
and a lingering desire to return.
Once I did return
but the rain kept me from waiting -
or was it my heart?

I guess I'll never really know
exactly what I felt for you
or why it has never quite left me,
but I've accepted it and keep it
hidden in my heart
for no one else to see.
Me, I live with my memories
and my feelings for you,
savored in my heart
forever.
