About 5 times a year, I run across a recipe in a magazine or something for waffles. Like this month's Yankee magazine for Gingerbread waffles, and I think, "I should get a waffle maker."

Should I get a waffle maker? I keep hoping to run across one in the thrift, but haven't had any luck.

What say you?

We live for waffles. We have both a regular waffle iron and a belgian waffle iron. Have been eating waffles as long as I can remember! OK, now you have me wanting a waffle with bacon. Breakfast for supper tonight! :-)

Thanks for the vote of confidence :) What brand do you have? Everytime I say to my dh, "we should get a waffle maker, maybe..." he absolutely agrees! I would only be able to make them on Saturday's and Sunday's when we do slloooooow breakfast, but I think that's worth $20 or so...they're currently on sale at Kohls :)

And, Mary Beth, breakfast for supper is one of my favorite go-to meals! My little one will eat eggs and bacon when she won't touch anything else!

I have a waffle maker, and it makes the most fabulous Belgian waffles...I think the recipe was in Country Woman magazine years ago. It was around $20 and mine will stand vertically so it doesn't take up too much space. You will love it!

Any recommendations on brand names? I just want a good basic, nothing that is "professional" or whatever...I'm looking on Macy's just for reviews and wow, people can sure be picky with their likes and dislikes.

Do your have temperature gages, or "finish lights"?

For our regular waffle maker, I have one that I got as a wedding present in 1976 and it is a GE. I love it because the grills come off to wash and you can turn them upside down to make grilled sandwiches. I love it so much that I got onto Ebay and found one just like it never used and bought it for $9.00! I figure if mine ever goes out, I have a spare. :-) And I just looked on ebay and found a number of them. This one is cheap, the rest seem to have very proud owners: http://cgi.ebay.com/vtg-GE-Electric-Grill-Waffle-Waffler-Baker-Maker-Iron-/230546868200?pt=Small_Kitchen_Appliances_US&hash=item35adaa07e8

My Belgian waffle maker is a Presto Flipside. If you want a chuckle, you might go to my blog and read about making Belgian waffles. You can read it at:
http://www.oklahomapastrycloth.com/blog/?cat=74

Though, I had grown up with waffles for as long as I can remember, the first time I ever had Belgian waffles was at the 1964 World's Fair in NYC and I was in the 4th grade. I thought they were the most amazing things I'd ever tasted.

I bought one for my DH for christmas one year. Belive it or not it is the only appliance in the kitchen I am not allowed to touch. We love waffles and it is well worth the money! Splurge and get yourself one, it will last for years!

I for one would love you to post that Gingerbread Waffle recipe please.

I have an old waffle iron and I remember it was a mess with batter everywhere and sticking to it but I love waffles and never got rid of it. Maybe I'll get it out and give it a whirl again! Now they have the spray oils so maybe that will help...mine is before non-stick was invented! Ha! Ha!

Gingerbread waffles sound yummy, would love to have the recipe.
We have a waffle iron like Mary Beth's, its so easy to use and so easy to clean. We seem to use if for a while and then put up and forget about it for a while. I think its time to get it out. My hubby doesn't cook much but he does like to make waffles which makes them extra good.

Yes! Please share the recipe! We love our waffles, too! SO much, in fact, that we bought one of those double-sided, two-at-a-time Belgian waffle makers - we love it! (It's a Waring Pro.) Waffles are one of our Sunday brunch favorites! The cool thing is that now that the kids are older, if I make the batter, my son and his friends can have a "waffle fest" making their own. And some friends of ours taught us years ago to set up a "waffle bar." We have a variety of bowls full of cut up apples, bananas, strawberries, dried cranberries, mini chocolate chips, and nuts, along with pitchers of real maple and other fruit syrups, plates of bacon and sausages, and a big ol' honkin' bowl of freshly whipped cream at the ready! Everyone who shares in the fun goes crazy for it - 'tis quite the experience indeed! What can I say? Breakfast IS the most important - and fun - meal of the day! ;) - Nini P.S. We do the same for pancakes, too!

God gave us two hands... one to help ourselves, and one to help others!

Jonni,

A few years back my DH and I were rummage "sailing" and happened upon a very old vintage waffle iron-My husband is the chef in the house and does all of the cooking-He couldn't resist and bought it. I have never had home-made waffles before and they were to DIE for! Home-made waffles are light and crispy-Nothing at all like store-bought.

Get it! You won't regret it!

I almost got rid of my waffle iron when a friend & I discovered this blog: http://www.waffleizer.com/" target="_blank"> http://www.waffleizer.com/ This man proves you can "waffleize" anything.

My friend & I have started sending each other pictures of what we've made in ours. The best was a grilled turkey & ham with sweet pepper may & avocado. So yummy!

Think outside the box! We're going to try banana nut "muffins" this weekend.

Wow, thanks so much for all the positive responses! I'm definitely going to get one this weekend!

Here is the recipe for the gingerbread waffles. The only thing I would leave out is the cardamom...too expensive, and not enough use for it.
Gingerbread Waffles:
Makes 10

* 2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1/4 cup granulated sugar
* 1 teaspoon baking powder
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 3/4 teaspoon salt
* 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
* 1 teaspoon ground ginger
* 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
* 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
* 4 large eggs
* 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
* 1 cup whole milk
* 1/2 cup sour cream, plus more for serving
* 3 tablespoons unsulfured molasses
* Lingonberry preserves (or other berry preserves), for serving

Directions

1. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices in a large bowl. Whisk together eggs, butter, milk, sour cream, and molasses in a medium bowl. Add egg mixture to flour mixture, and whisk until smooth.
2. Heat a waffle iron. Spoon 1/3 cup batter into each mold, and cook until golden brown. Serve warm waffles with sour cream and preserves.
