I'm getting frustrated with frontline. Just curious to see what you all use for fleas and ticks on dogs and cats--and what WORKS for you? Please don't say to bathe my cats--no way is that happening :) and as far as brushing something into their fur each day--no go either. And--they do go in the woods around here--I'd hate to keep them chained up all day. We've used frontline successfully for a few years, but this year seems not as effective for some reason. Especially for ticks. Oh, and it has to be something that's safe with kids too. Thanks for any input!

When I see a flea on Boxer, I spray him real good with a mix of water and apple cider vinegar. The fleas flee. I don't know if it works on ticks, since he hardly ever gets them. It could be that the little buggers are building up resistance to frontline.

Alot of places are telling people to stop using Frontline because they haven't changed their formula in 10 years and the fleas are becoming resistant. I haven't had a problem, but switched to Advantage this fall because Costco switched from Frontline to Advantage. So far no problems.

Sheila,

I don't use Frontline regularly, but my housecat has fleas now. It didn't really do a good job the first month (ummm, probably because I bathed him too soon after dosing) but this month, it does appear to be working. I am sure that, by now, fleas are building up resistance to Frontline. I have heard that, but can't confirm it. I have been out of the veterinary loop for about 5 years, so I am not familiar with any of the new drugs. I do know that if you have a pretty major infestation, using a product like Program or Sentinel really does help. Though the flea actually has to bite the cat, the eggs it then produces cannot hatch. So, it is NOT an instant fix. Of course, nothing about flea control is really instant, in a sense. If 10% of the flea population is the adults and 90% is the eggs and larvae, it just takes time to eliminate them. I am sure they are all in my rugs, but the best thing to do is to vacuum like crazy and wash pet bedding.

I'd recommend also reading up on the flea life cycle to better understand your foes, if you haven't already. Good luck!!!

Garlic juice, 1/4 teaspoon per day. I mix it in about 1 teaspoon of canned dog food for all three cats, they love it and divide the rest of the canned food between my two dogs. All of my cats weigh 10-13 pounds and the pups weigh 10-18 pounds. The pups are outside all of the time and two of the cats are outside. Here in Texas fleas and ticks are a problem year round. I have been doing this for about 5 months now and none of my furkids have fleas or ticks nor do they smell like garlic.

Yes, that is very good info, I've always used frontline, but would love to try a natural alternative

How has the advantage worked for you? My dog has been on it for two months now, after being on frontline, and I saw a flea on ME yesterday! We have chickens and whatnot outside, so it MIGHT'VE been from them, but could it be from her? Could the Advantage not be working?

I forgot to add this, it took about two weeks before both of my pups were flea free, and this dosage has been helping my one outside cat regrow her fur where the Revolution had last been applied. Poor Ms.Mary would lose her hair and have chemical burns wherever I applied Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution. It was extremely frustration to apply a product that caused her pain to get her fleas under control. I had tried 2 or 3 other “natural” solutions and the garlic juice is easiest and works for everyone.

I buy the garlic juice at Kroger and Brookshire Bros. grocery stores, my WallyWorld does not carry it. I find it with the spices usually close to the bottom shelf. I have toyed with idea of just using fresh minced garlic, but haven't done it yet.
