I saw an adjustable loom for making knitted socks at the fabric shop & was wondering if anyone has ever made socks that way. I've always wanted to knit socks, but using 4 needles looks complicated, so am thinking about this loom.

I've never tried it, but what a great idea. I'm headed to the local craft store later and will definitely be looking for this. I am so intimidated when it comes to making socks. I have the books, the needles and the yarn, I even have a ball of sock yarn all rolled up and ready to go...I'm just too chicken to start. I've knitted pretty much everything else, but when it comes to socks...

Finally gave up on ever learning to knit them and have started crocheted from the toe up. Not that I have my one nice pair actually finished yet, but it's getting closer! Made a pair of house slippers to practice in the beginning and it worked really nicely.

Knitting socks on the loom....... there are several adjustable sock looms that help make socks extra easy and lots of fun too. You can also enjoy making socks on the loom with the newest book of Isela Phelps entitled "Loom knitting socks" and it's a treasury of all kinds of socks. Lots of knitters say that they prefer knitting socks with needles. But most often they haven't tried making socks on the loom and haven't discovered how much fun it can be. Then there are those who have had trouble knitting socks and the loom is just another special way to create and enjoy socks. Besides knitting and loom-knitting socks you can also enjoy crocheting socks. So one way or another, there's lots of special ways to enjoy keeping our feet warm and cozy with our own hand-made gems. It's a NEW YEAR and that's also a nice time to treat oneself to a new adventure. |

I have several different looms. I love all of them! It is not as hard on my hands and is easy to put down with a small one running around. I have done socks on a knitting board by decor accents, not the sock one though. I would love to give it a try!

"Decor Accents" is the company owned by Isela Phelps and her husband who makes excellent fine quality looms. Isela is considered to have played a major part in recent years in bringing joy and life to the looms and in learning how to loom-knit. She has 3 books in her series that can easily be found at craft stores and on Amazon and from her own business store. She designs patterns for the loom and her hubby makes the looms. That's where you can get the "WONDER SOCK LOOM" with an adjustable gauge which is what you want for socks. It's definitely one of the finest sock looms you can get and all handmade and it shows.
You can also find a sock loom from "The Knitting Board." These sock looms are less intricate and styled a little differently in terms of the materials. Less expensive in cost. But you may also enjoy them as well. You can find these now at craft stores.
"What's the advantage of a sock loom?" is a question you might be asking and wondering about. Just think for a moment about your socks. The pegs are very close together so you can loom-knit with your sock yarns and make some lovely pairs.
Remember you are knitting without needles!

Hello NatureMaiden, for knitting socks you do need "double pointed needles" (referred to commonly as dp needles.) But for loom knitting your socks and yes, you are really knitting but just without needles, you just need your sock loom and your pick. That's why many people love making socks with their sock looms.

Here's a look at the "Wonder Sock Loom" that I have mentioned in previous posts from "Decor Accents." I thought the farmgirls here might enjoy getting to see what this loom looks like.

You'll also get to see a sock and be inspired!

Sometimes it's just extra fun to actually sit back and enjoy seeing what an expert loom knitter is making and Isela is one of the very best around. So just enjoy this adventure and seeing if making socks on the loom might be something really special to explore and have fun with this year.
This is a very cool and interesting video that shows you the "Wonder Sock Loom" and how to go about making your socks and is presented by Isela Phelps.....

Connie - some do use 4 double pointed needles but others use 2 circular needles and others use one large circular needle for knitting socks. My man's family all use the double needles but they drive me nuts. The sock knitting class I took taught us to use 2 circular needles and I really like this method although I want to try the Magic Loop method with one large circular and you knit both socks at the same time. Just like there are apparently multiple types of looms there are multiple methods of knitting socks.
