I was told it was OK to sell baked goods or jellies at my local farmer's market, but I'm not sure they've looked into all the regulations. I know that charitable organizations have bake sales all the time, but if I, as an individual, sell as a commercial venture, do I need a license? And what labelling standards do I need to meet?
How do I go about finding out what the applicable rules and regulations are? Are the applicable regulations state, county or federal?

What a great link! I thought I would have to read between the lines of a lot of different rules and regulations but this spells it right out! I will want to study it a bit more, but wanted to say thanks for posting it.

Just to be safe I would suggest checking with your county health department too. In most areas you do have to get a permit to sell food items. That permit is issued by your county.

Hi There,
Most all areas require permits and a commercial kitchen and the labeling can be tricky so be very careful. Now many areas have places where you can rent time in a commercial kitchen so you may check that out. Another place to look is churches and Moose lodges etc that may let you lease space. They will probably require insurance but that is a good thing to have anyway. Your health department should have all the information you need and also check with the Ag department as they usually regulate smaller operations.
Hope this helps, it gets tricky but most of the time people are very helpful.
