What is the latin name for the plantain herb used in healing oils and salves? I've tried to find it but a lot of people around here are calling Hosta a plantain lily.

Hi, Nicole, I googled it and came up with "plantago major" and botanical.com has lots of info on it. I have used this for years when I get a mosquito bite...it really works - just take a leaf and smoosh it up or hold it over a match for a few seconds and rub on the bite... and if you go to botanical.com, you'll see it looks kinda like a lily but it I don't think it's really in the Hosta family. Good luck! Judy

You can also use plaintain in cuts and for diaper rash and crade cap. Just smoosh it up really well in a mortar unti lyou have a good paste and apply it directly.

My friend's daughter has diabetes and she got a really bad cut that was cleaned right away and still got infected. She put mushed up plaintain in it and with in two days it was better.
