Ok, DH and I have been out foraging in the neighborhood and in friends yards for apples this year. I have put up so much applesuace and apple pie filling that I'm almost appled out. What other things can I do with apples besides cider? Suggestions?? recipes??

They are wonderful dried! Like apple chips... dried apples can also be strung on wire to form a wreath and then sprinkled with cinamon to make a cute decoration.

Apples 'n' onions with sausage! Soften sliced onions and apples in a skillet and serve with kielbasa or ham. Delicious.
Slow-cooked pork with sauerkraut (homemade or rinsed store-bought) and apples is also good.
I also like putting apples in with oven roasted vegetables and bacon. I like to use some combination of apples, onions, cabbage, carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, and/or squash. Toss lightly in oil and sprinkle with chopped bacon and then roast for about an hour and devour.
I second the drying idea, but for eating - then you can try all those schnitz recipes! Or make trail mix, toss them into oatmeal, etc.
Apple cake, tart tatin, crisp, muffins, etc. are always options, too.
Good luck!

The Ball Blue Book of Canning has a recipe for apples canned with dried cherries and raisins. It makes a great filling for crisp.

Make sauerkraut, adding apples, onions and caraway seeds.
Thinly sliced apples make a great addition to a grilled cheese sandwich, especially with nicer cheeses. add grilled onions and a good mustard for a real treat!
Of course, that won't use up many but it's sure good!!

I say make MORE pie filling :) We have discovered this great recipe that uses pie filling, -- esp. if you eat a lot of wild meat or kind of dry-ish meat--pour pie filling into a 9 x 13 cake pan, slice up the meat (we've done pork, beef, duck, goose, venison, and pheasant), lay it on top of the apples, then make stuffing and spread it on top. Cover with foil, bake for 30-45 min (till the meat's done) and it is SOOOOOOOOO yummmmmmmmmm!!
So make more pie filling!! :) |
