Is enamel paint the only option? I want to make them into storage and canleholders. Just don't want rust stains everywhere.

I used krylon spray on mine before...no rust yet! (you can find it at an art supply store, or michaels.) Comes in colors or clear. (glossy, matte etc). Just make sure that you don't get the "workable fixative". It's clear, but can come off with water etc.

You can seal with polyurethane, it's cheap and clear, used on wood decks for sealing, so you get a big amount. Also, clear nail polish works great for smaller items, and the brush is built in!
