I'd like to open a discussion... How do you hear the music of your favorite artists? How often do you adopt a new artist? Is radio your source for music? Do you ever listen to internet radio?
I'm asking because I work with a studio on Music Row. We have some great singers that need a fanbase. The Country Music Assoc says most country fans still hear new songs on the radio as compared to internet sites but it's just about impossible to get air time for any but major label artists. Anybody have any suggestions on how to reach the ears of possible fans? I sure would appreciate any insight to your listening / music purchases/ fan following adventures with your favorites, (especially the ones who are not nationally famous.) Thanks in advance. I just have to believe there are other ways to reach new fans.

I think radio is still a great avenue for new artists. But if you're going to go the internet route you not only have to put the songs/artists out there, but you have to hype them up through social networking. Facebook and Twitter are crucial for reaching the masses via internet, I think. It's like free advertising and you get out of it what you put into it. But, like my husband is saying to me right now, in the end it's all about who's got the good songs. You can have a great voice and not have good songs and you'll never make it into the industry. Just the same, you can have an awful voice (Shania Twain) and have great songs and a good look and you will become popular. The nationally famous have to meet the same standard. The minute they start putting out bad albums, they're done and the next rising star with a catchy tune will take their place. Look what happened to Garth Brooks with his "Chris Gaines" album.
So, I think if they have catchy tunes and a good look, you can get them featured on itunes as a new artist as well as get them super active "tweeting" and such and they just might get some success. I'd love to listen to your new artists. My husband and I love listening to new country music as we are musicians ourselves (well, he is - I'm just a singer).

I don't listen to music very often. I do love music, I only have a few CD's that I listen to. Which is sad. I just found Rufus Wainwright when I was looking up the words for Hallelujah. He sang that beautifully..I do listen to the radio when I am in the car and it annoys me when they don't give the name of the person who just sang the song. If they did I would probley own more CD's. I'm not good with computers either but I would love a site of new music showing the singer and words to the new song.

My soon to be SIL has just started a band. They are country rock type. But he has a Facebook page and has been getting jobs from that! They did make a CD I think and would love it to be heard on radio. But Facebook is a great avenue. I listen to regular radio only when I am in my car. On tv we have satellite and we have lots of music channels I listen to at home. I love music.

Maybe have the artists do some free or "cheap seat" concerts. I think it would go over really well with the public especially with the economy the way it is. Some of the radio stations in my area even help sponsor these kind of events. Sometimes they'll have the new artist on air with them, do a little interview and play a couple of their songs. Yeah but still really gonna have to advertise it. I agree with the other girls, Facebook would be a great way to get that going.

I do most of my listening on radio, some on the computer like Pandora, something that highlighted new artists would be nice

Radio, then if I like the artist I go to iTunes. I won't listen to radio stations that don't give the name of the song and artist. That drives me nuts! There are some really good Canadian country artists (my Texan bias couldn't accept it at first ;-) ) and I don't think they get much air time in the States, which is too bad

I wasn't sure anybody would respond to me so I sure appreciate your honest responses. Dixiana Music as well as most of the artists have a fanpage on Facebook. It's just not enough. You almost have to know the name or know somebody who knows the name. I've started a label called Dogbones Music on Reverbnation where the artists are grouped to the label. Recently I've learned how to embed code into the Masters of the songs for digital distribution for places like itunes and internet radio. so if I get an internet radio station going, I'll be sure to announce the name of singer and the song. My thoughts are to have time for new songwriters - basically their demos. Some of those songs are great and nobody knows them. Joe Rice, one of songwriters, demo'd a great song (personal opinion) - Music and You. Travis Logan from England - great traditional country voice. You've got my mind thinking now on reviews on the multiple sites like CD Baby and Reverbnation. I also like the idea of sponsored concerts... I have artists all over the country. I guess it could just be reaching out to event organizers.Or maybe business owners who would sponsor a show. Another idea is to link the dixiana.com site to a dixiana artist site with images and recordings; another link to the songwriters with lyrics and recordings; another link to the label Dogbones Music where Dixiana artists are grouped with other artists I've chosen. I have a woman songwriter who writes/sings about her life: husband, kids, work, dust. Songs most could relate to. I think she'd be a good show for a woman's group. My husband doesn't think she's funny.

I could tell from your insights that you are familiar with this animal of an industry. never say just a singer... some people are frogs - myself included. If I get the radio station going, I'm going to be looking for more artists than ones I know. Keep in touch.
