Penny is precious! Love seeing pictures! If anyone wants me to post their photo for them, just e-mail it to me. I can also tell you how to do it pretty easily. If I can do it, you can too. I am pretty electronically challenged. LOL

I love this forum thanks for getting it started. Everyones' babies sound and look wonderful. In our family we have 4 cocker spaniels named Tucker who is 9 years old, Murphy who is also 9 years old, Tilly who is 5 years and Zoey whos age is a mystery because we rescued her from the humane society. Tucker and Zoey are both solid black, Tilly is black and white and Murphy is buff. We also have Bud a black cat who is so old I can't remember when he came to us. All of these guys are fabulous, they love us regardless of our downfalls and they know the feeling is mutual. Let's hear it for cats and dogs!!!!!!

We raise Aussies, Blue Bear , Rosie and LC (pronounced Elsie). Also, we have 2 cats. One was rescued out of a plastic bin with a lid on, about a year ago, Nash is her name. She is a bit slow and sleeps ALL the time. And Ruby, saved from being put down at the vets. She was dropped off by someone who couldn't continue to feed her. She was only a kitten and they told us she was part ocicat, but I wouldn't know it. She does has a "voice" and strange very close and personal though. Does anyone know anything about ocicats ? Well, that's about all....have a great Sunday ! Susan

Susan, what are the last 3 you mentioned. Are they dogs also? I have never heard of them. Are they herd dogs?

thanks channah, this is a great idea. you can tell a lot about someone by their animal stories. farmgirls are so awesome. thats a great way to give help to animals. i made and froze dog food yesterday. i use my leftovers and whole wheat. my eggs etc. i think it was teresa that got me started last year making it. we have 2 rescue dogs. skimo is a corgi cross and sloopy is a cow dog mix. skimo came from the need to keep skunks away from the house. they were digging in under our foundation. i had tried many things. he came from a rescue a year earlier. they raided a home with over 150 dogs in cages. he had been so chewed up that he required many surgeries to his face. he is missing part of an ear and his muzzle is scarred. his eyes were almost blind. when you look at his eyes now you can see deep inside his heart. he had recouperated at a vets. home. his wife was the president of the humane society here.she has many dogs on her plaace. they all have shelters from the elements. he slept in the snow blizzards out in the open in fear.we brought him here. he was here and afraid for 2 weeks. he got out somehow. we have the place fenced. we tried everything to find him. even tracking him with dogs. so sad gone and afraid. i felt sick. weeks later i am feeding the pigs and feel like someone is behind me. i look its skimo. he was skinny dirty and tired. i realized he needed a companion for winter. we called and they brought our sloopy girl. when sloopy got out of the rig it was so beautiful. they had been best friends. he had been protecting her at the dog hoarders. he was bloody and broken in saving her. they barked and ran on the lawn. joy was in the air. may i say they still love eachother. they play and romp and you can see them smile.itty bityy is a part of their pack. he is alpha yorkie. they love him too and tolerate that he is a teenager and mouthy right now.the rescues now sleep in a hay shelter we made them. it has a heat lamp for cold nights. we have NO skunks. i am so blessed by these dogs. i have to be very careful if i have a stick or shovel. you can see them back up. i say its ok easy now. they settle. i can pet skimo not sloopy. she will let me touch her snout. she is so fearful. she also will go straight up a wall or fence to get out. you cannot lock her up. i do wish i could give her the affection she craves. since she cannot be caught i am not sure how i could do it. if you have ideas for me that would be great. pretty long post girls. i hope others will tell us how they got their babies and about their lives. happy days sherrye

Sherry, what a great story! Thanks for saving those dogs. Animal hoarders are the worst. I am sure your dogs are grateful to you.

Sherry, that's so good of you to have rescued those 2 dogs. And good that they found each other again. I don't understand hoarders. They think in their minds they are doing a good thing for these animals but they are killing them. It's so sad. These people are sick. And they are hurting these animals because of it. But then there are people like ya'll that rescue them and give them a good home. Good for you, Sherry. They will be happy and healthy there with you.

Sherry, Thank you so much for sharing! What a neat story! Those dogs are blessed to have you. :)
Well this week I go into the animal shelter and check in on the little kitten my dad rescued. I hope she's doing alright.

I have a German Shorthaired Pointer named Sam who 'chose' me. I was driving to work one day and nearly hit him on the road. His coat is speckled and solid and he blended in with the dawn light. I pulled over and got out of the car. He was standing in the middle of the road watching me. A car came up and saw him and drove slowly by. He peeked in at them practically begging to be taken in. I called to him and he came running at me (moment of fear was followed by resolve) my instincts told me he was safe.
He sat right down in front of me looked up at me and started barking in protest. I can imagine he was saying "where's my family!!" I opened my car door and he jumped in. He was a bundle of energy and anxiety. I drove to a few nearby houses and asked if anyone knew who he belonged to. No one did. He had no tags and later I found out....no i.d. chip. Finally I took him to the local no-kill shelter and hoped that his parents would come for him. Well a week went by and he was still there (and not adoptable because the shelter gives the owners 5 days to show up). I put a hold on him and took him home.
That was a year ago Dec 3rd of this year. He's been one of the most devoted companions ever since. Smarter than any dog I know and would rather be with me than anywhere else on earth. We should all try to "Be the person your dog thinks you are".

Hannah: and I am blessed by him. Nothing like a hyper dog to teach you patience. I swear God is prepping me for children ;-)
Darlene: they are wonderful. I'd never even heard of them until I found him. Had no idea what he was. His devotion and smarts constantly amaze me. |

howdy farmgirls, things are going to change here. sloopy one of the rescue dogs, the one i cant catch up tried to bite a neighbor. so i called the humane society. they donated a beautiful dog run for her. so the challenge begins. we have it up the door open. we are feeding them inside the run. they will go in to eat. next i am going to shut the door. then open it quickly. trying to get her used to it. i saw the dog whisperer calm a dog in a run. so i am going to try that. she is just scared. next he sat in the run with the dog. he had his back to the dog. this took hours. when he was done he could actually pet the dog. he says you need to get the brain in the dog to move forward. that it is stuck in fear. i am going to try it. the run has only been here a few days. i will let time go by first. then it will just be part of the farm. i put bedding hay in there also. sure hope it works. Does anyone know of a good book on training cow dogs. she wants to work in a bad way. when i run the cow across the road she is right next to me watching for directions. i am the one that needs trained. happy days on the farm sherrye

| funny story to share. I bought Penny, my daschund/jack russell a coat for winter time, it is so cute, beige wool with a pink fleece lining. Well I put it on her and she promptly tried to grab the collar to pull it off, she went round and round and rolled over on the floor. it was the funniest thing. she has now decided she looks so cute in her new coat that she'll wear it . |

today was the first time i have ever been able to touch sloopy. she was inside a tent we have things stored in. i was in there too. she moved passed me. i was able to reach out and catch up her collar. she has lived here for way over a year. she is challenging folks at our gate. i am trying to get her settled. she let me touch her. she shook and drooled. i stayed calm and just kept stroking her. she finally calmed. she opened her legs while sitting on her butt. she let me rub her belly. i could see she was liking it. i let her go and gave her the chance to bolt. she stayed with me. i continued to love on her till she was done. we bonded for more than 30 minutes. it is a fine start. happy days sherrye

Well now, we have a 16 year old (as of July) deaf and gimpy bassett hound mix named Tiki and she is having ear troubles...she has a black gunky stuff in her ears and what sounds like fluid down in her inner ear. I've got a vet visit with her doctor, but I think it's ear mites, the black stuff...any good doggie ear cleaning recipes out there? I hate the old girl to suffer...=(
Thanks all May all of your dogs and cats be happy and well!

Hi Annika, When our dog gets ear mites I clean them out with some gentle soap and water ( make sure it doesn't go down into the ear canal). Then I gently heat a little bit of olive oil and garlic ( you can use fresh or dried)together. Then I put it into a little dropper and put some down her ear. Then I gently around her ear so that it gets down into her ear all the way. I do this 2x a day. It does work well but ask your vet first. :) Hope she gets better soon! Hugs, Hannah

Annika I have labs and they have frequent ear troubles. Our Vet recommended cleaning their ears with a mixture of Betadine and water. We use it as an ear flush, pouring some in massagine it in well and then swabbing out anything that we can see and letting them shake the rest out. It works great. Kathy |
