I GOT A DEHYDRATOR GIVEN TO ME!!!!
Come on Girls! Hit me with your best recipes! I am so ready for this, and have been huntin for a reasonably priced one for quite a while. Then I had a lady offer me a brand new one she was given and didn't want! Yea!
I could also use any preservation ideas. Do dried fruits rehydrate well? What can be dried for later uses? And what are those later uses?
I'm a little excited! :)

I would also be interested in dehydrating recipes, I have had one for years and my husband was just talking about using it. Jill Lillian |

My extension agent says you can dry herbs in a few hours so I am going to try that out. They let us borrow it for a few days. Congrats on getting yours from a sweet lady. That is wonderful.

you know all that zucchini you have? Yup, slice it up thick, I usually quarter the slices, layer it on the dehydrator at 115-120 degrees and plug it in. It takes about 20 hours, so I make sure I start it afternoon so it doesn't finish up while I'm asleep. Then this winter, all you have to do is toss it in your soups and you have more veggies. yummy.
Fruit leather. Did you get the trays by chance?

I got five trays and the instruction book. It says I can do fruit leather if I buy the special tray or wrap a tray in plastic wrap. I'm gonna try it this weekend, but I have tomatoes and melons to do first.

I am wondering if any of you have any tips on drying Banana chips? We soaked them in honey water then let them draing and then put them in the dehydrator 8-10 hours per recipe. One whole day later and they are not crunchy...funny chewy like. Any advice would be welcomed :-)

Ooh, I need recipes too! I have one and the one time I tried salmon jerky, it wasn't very good. I'm more inclined to dry fruit and veggies than meat. Any good recipes??

I just dried a quart jars worth (once they were dry) of tomatoes. I took the cherry and plum tomatoes and washed them. Then sliced them in half and laid them cut side up in the trays. It took about 2 days to dry good and stiff, but there's enough for a small dinner sized batch of vege soup this fall! I'm so excited! I'm goin to get some melons and corn tonight. I'm gonna make melon candy and dry some corn for storin too. I'm of course gonna can and freeze most of the corn, but I want to try to dry some. I know the hamster likes the died corn from the pet shop, so he'll eat some of the dried stuff too!

Here's something easy....any frozen veggies or fruit you can put directly on the trays and dehydrate. You won't need to blanch them or use any lemon juice. Herbs go directly on too.
Just be sure with small stuff like peas and corn to use liners or a GOOD HINT *** SLIDE YOUR TRAYS INTO PANTY HOSE OR KNEE HIGHS. They are easily washed after and are reuseable.
Potatoes take a little more work. -first steam them just until tender -them put in fridge overnight -next day they are easy to peel and easy to handle -then slice thin, dice small or shred for hashbrowns **the reason you need to blanch them first is because they will turn black when you dehydrate them.

Letha, thank you! I was gonna do potatoes next week, if I don't keep the thing full with all the little things I'm findin in the garden! Ha! Ha! I am on my 2nd batch of tomatoes and have the go ahead to pick cantaloupe agian this weekend from a friend. I can't wait to try everything I can think of! LOL! I have so many plans and the freezer tip will really help out, since things are pilin up faster than I can dry them.
I have a few roasts and some deer meat in the freezer for jerky this winter. We were given a meat slicer by my inlaws about 4 years ago for slicin up my rolls of soy meat that I just love. It can now serve as a jerky meat slicer and my DH used it to slice cucumbers for fryin the other night, so I think I'll use it for zucchini chips for the dehydrator as well!
What about eggplant? Does it dry well? Is it good for chips, or tossin in soups, or rehydratin and fryin, anything?

I just did a deyhdrater full of tomatoes today. I'm not sure on eggplant and I was just looking at my eggplant today and wondering that myself, lol. I will do a little research and get back to ya.
I got a big dehydrater on ebay for around $100 delivered. So far so good. It has ten trays and the fan in on the back. I only have one at the moment due to funds but we are wanting to get 2 more for ourselves and my inlaws want one too. They put up all kinds of veggies from the garden and have run out of room. They saw how little room all my veggies take up and were sold, lol.
