I want to make some rag rugs. But I have never done this before. I know how to crochet and I assume that's how they are made? But I am not sure how to get them started. And what size hook will I need?
Thanks, Kris

In "MaryJane's Stitching Room" she recommends size L/11 up to size P/16.

I just googled how to make rag rugs. Good grief! There are alot of ways to make them. I just thought they were crocheted. They were doing all kinds of things. I guess I might have to take a class or get one on one training. I learn better that way. Thanks for the help ya'll.

Thank you so much, Wendy. I will check out your blog tomorrow. I will probably have lots of questions. Like can you come to Ga. and teach a few classes???

What kind of yarn are you using, Karla? Just chunky acrylic? Does it hold up to wear and tear? I want to make a few rugs this fall and I really don't want to tear up fabric for the job so yarn might be a good method for me. I though about using a flexible twine or rope but I think it would be murder on my hands.

hey Kristen, I have also seen them (rag rugs) made from old t-shirts and those plastic market/store bags.....
One of the ladies where my mom lives, would have all the ladies save their plastic shopping bags, then she would cut them into strips(I suspect she did a 'spiral type cut' to get 1 continuous strip of plastic) then join them like you would the sheets or t-shirts...any how, she would crochet small kitchen rugs as well as market tote bags from them...hmmm, I think I might have to experiment with this idea this winter. Has anyone else crocheted w/ plastic bags?

Plastic bags might be something I could do too. My mom saves all her bags for me to use at the market. I didn't do the market this year. And I hate the thought of all those thousands of bags with bugs and spiders hiding in them.
I am a little confused about how to rip the sheets now. I went yesterday to the thrift and bought 4. I don't think I should just rip them all into strips. Somehow they should all be connected. It looks like on one of these tutorials they sewed the ends. I am really not a reading learner. I need to be shown once then I can go from there. But maybe someone could explain so I could understand better.

I was hoping you might say that! I'll bring them. And Ruth is bringing me her big hook. I am so excited to learn how to do this! Thank you.

great information. My mom brought me out my grams tools she used when making braided rag rugs. I hope to start continuing that tradition this coming winter!

I saw these in a magazine recently, I think it was Farm Home, anyway they braided them and then stitched them together, I think crocheted is better, my mom used to make these, and she would buy balls of fabric at the flea market. Sheets are a good idea, i think you could use flannel shirts too. I guess I wil learn with you Saturday : )

I think crocheted would be alot easier also. As easy as possible is what I want. I can't wait to learn this. I'm sure we will have a very good time. Can't wait to meet Mary Jane and Megan and all my new farmgirl friends! Wish you could come too, Grace.
