Hey, sorry to bother you all with a silly question but I don't know anyone in "real life" to ask. As part of my personal de-cluttering efforts, I'm setting up an etsy account to hopefully find new homes for vintage items I've accumulated and don't really use. So that means I finally need to set up a paypal account too (yeah, I know, time to join the 21st century).

So I've entered my credit card info and now I get a screen saying I have to enter my bank account routing number as well in order to complete the account setup.

I've never had any kind of online shopping system ask for more than my credit card info. My husband uses paypal and I don't remember him having to do this. It might be on the level, but I just had the paranoid thought that perhaps I've stumbled onto one of those "phishing" pages rather than the real paypal.com.

Did you have to enter your bank info when you got your paypal account? Should I do it?

I think some people set it up so you can have it automatically taken out of your bank account. When I set mine up I had to do it, then they confirm the bank. I never actually finished doing the confirmation though, and I just use my credit card.

Aha! I just checked my email, and paypal has confirmed the account setup even though I never finished entering information in the "bank info" screen. Looks as though I did have the legitimate paypal site, and paypal was being sneaky by not allowing me to opt out of that bank info even though it's not actually required.

At least I hope that's what happened!

Amie- you might only have limited functionality with Paypal until you confirm. I always do the auto process where they deposit a couple cents into my account and then I tell them what was deposited. Paypal is very reputable and great with the claims process. But definitly go with your gut!

I think if you directly type in the name of paypal's address, then you don't have to worry about phishing. It's only when you follow a link, that you need to be careful of hackers.

I think you have to provide bank account information in order to gain "verified" status so you can establish a seller's account.

Yes you do need to hook it up to your bank account-I've had Paypal for several years, and having it hooked up to your bank account means you'll be able to take your earnings from your paypal account & deposit it into your bank account. I do this with the biz money as it keeps me from spending it on eBay or other sites, ensuring I can pay my suppliers. It's safe, and you'll love it once you have it.

My experience has been that you can do credit card or bank account or both. That may be why they asked for the routing number. But, the routing number is no good to them without your account number and vice versa. You have to have both to be able to get into your account. All the routing number does is tell them which bank you use. Chase, Wakovia, Wells Fargo etc.

We have a separate savings account at the bank which is set up only for business with Paypal. We try to keep around $100 there for ebay purchases. If there are insufficient funds, then Paypal will bill our credit card.
