I'm growing some lovely and fragrant lemon balm and are wondering how others use this herb. Thanks, Suzanne

Hi,
I have been drying mine to use as tea this winter. I am interested, too, to learn what others use it for.
Warm wishes,

Yes, it makes a good, relaxing tea. Also, if you rub the lemon balm leaves on your skin, it's a natural bug repellant.

Thanks, Suzanne Love having all the nature around. Growing things are a bit tricky, but herbs do well here, thankfully

The tea is especially good for nasal congestion during cold and allergy season.

Melina, Rumi is one of my favorites, and that quotation is perfect. I'm an early morning person.

I will try the tea for both colds and allergies -- more allergies this time of year. Suzanne

In my herb garden in New Jersey I had an abundance of lemon balm. I used to pick bunches of it to stuff inside the cavity of chickens as they were roasting. Lemon scented chicken - mmmm!

If you have rabbits you can feed it to them because apparently they love it. So much so that every time my lemon balm gets nice a full and bushy it gets munched down to nubs by the wild bunnies LOL!

I made this wonderful ice cream with it once. http://hungryoyster.blogspot.com/2009/07/lemon-balm-ice-cream.html

MMM, ice cream is a favorite. I'll have to check out the recipe. I think my cat deters the rabbits.

The chicken sounds wonderful too. I'll have to add more to my garden next year. I'm loving all of these good ideas. Thank you. Suzanne

besides tea, I make an oil and a tincture out of it (I have a lot) then either use them separately or put them together to make cream. i'll send the recipe to anyone who wants it.

I would love the recipe too. Thankyou. Just harvested some today along with chamomile, oregano, lemon verbena, catnip, chocolate mint and sage.

I'll be drying sage, chocolate ming, and oregano and basil soon. I dried some of the lemon balm and was disappointed in the result -- not very lemonny. I'll try again. I did it after a rain, maybe I should have waited. Suzanne

Lemon balm is an acceptable substitute for lemon grass in thai recipes. I like asain food and lemon grass won't winter over here in MI. It is good in smoothies too. It is good on fish too. I used to have a lot, but we moved. A pot on the porch will keep the skeeters away too. Used to keep one growing on the porch so hubby didn't get his ankles bit while he smoked. When it grows out into the grass, (it will unless it is contained) it smells good when you mow.

Basic Lemon-balm Tea Recipe

Pour a generous cup of freshly boiled water over 1-2 teaspoons of dried lemon-balm leaves and steep, covered, for 10 minutes. Keep the leaves covered to prevent most of the essential oils from escaping.

Lemon Balm on Ice

Makes 10 cups.

10 sprigs fresh lemon balm, including stems, leaves and flowers
8 sprigs fresh orange mint
5 sprigs fresh apple mint

Gently fold the herbs into a large bowl to lightly "bruise" them. Pour 5 cups boiling water over the herbs and allow to steep for 15-20 minutes. Strain into a serving pitcher and add 5 cups cold water and ice. Add sugar to taste. Garnish with fresh lemon balm leaves if desired.

God Bless the USA!!!

The tea recipes sound quite nice! I have lemon balm given to me by a friend and now it is literally taking over! It is very invasive. Maybe if I start harvesting it more it will help!

Thanks for the ideas!
