I decided to flip my thinking from "Do I need this/Will I use it soon?" to "What can I throw away or get rid of..."

It works! I didn't get rid of anything that I really needed and I was able to clean out my laundry room cabinets and I am more room now to actually put away my laundry supplies when I am not using them *LOL* Oh wait! Laundry is a constant...well at least I can close the cabinent doors now!

I did the same thing in my bathroom cupboard. 5 year old hair products. Ew.

Congratulations on closing the cabinet doors!

Yeah I am pretty sure I have some products in my bathroom that are starting to fall into the "Scary" range....

Alee:
I try, and try, to clean out things in the bathroom. However, my sweetie hubby comes in and says he'll need this and he'll need that. I have to do the clean out when he is NOT home. LOL.

Marly- You could always try to just throw something away each trip into the bathroom ;)

I dump all unused shampoo/dish soap/hand soap
(those little bits left in the bottles, so I can
get rid of the bottles) into an empty laundry soap
jug. I use this mix for scrubbing up anything dirty
outside (dog dishes, chicken pans, water trays,
outdoor furniture, grill, etc.). Works great, gets
rid of clutter!

Wow Elizabeth! What a grand idea you have...to dump all leftover dish soap, shampoo, etc. soap stuff....into one big bottle....and use for the outside cleanin' jobs! So much nicer, than upside-down bottles sittin' around 'til you just can't get another drop out....he he...

Am goin' to be doing this for sure! Thanks soooo much for sharing. :)

Hugs & Smiles!!

Anybody here familiar with Flylady? She suggests using the remnants of left over shampoo for a daily toilet swish. As she says "Soap is soap." The daily swish prevents the need for serious cleaning with toilet bowl cleaners.

I saw a book at the bookstore called "Throw away Fifty Things" so I just took a trash bag and soon it was nearly full. I was surprised at how quickly I filled it.

It really is amazing how much duplicate stuff we keep around the house. And often times it is either trash (recyling too) or stuff that can be passed along to others. I am also trying really hard to organize as I put things away instead of just shoving things in the corner- you know? That helps too!

It's been a VERY slow process for me.
We have been remodeling this old house for a couple years now. We just seem to "save" things put away and then find out we don't miss them at all.
I've been trying to move a few things out by listing them on our local "Freecycle" board but it is frustrating when people say they want things and will come and get them and don't show up. Then the item is "sitting out" somewhere as well as not used.
Hopefully this last person comes for those two VCRs with remotes that are now sitting on a chair in my kitchen.

Hard to just "throw" some things.

Anne- I know what you mean. I usually give it about a week and then drop it off at the local donation thrift store. I figure if they don't want to spend the effort to come get it for free they can buy it at the thrift store.

I wonder if thrift stores ever feel weighted down with stuff!

LOL! Alee, I'm in a mood right now that when I read the title "what can I throw away/get rid of..." I said to myself, ALL OF IT. Now if I would just carry that thought out, I might get somewhere with my clutter!

I'm right there with you Audrey, ALL OF IT. But every time I try to just get rid of all the unnecessary stuff, my husband says, we should have a yard sale. But that means I should have a yard sale because he absolutely hates getting ready for the sale and sitting in the garage all through the sale. Honestly, I think it would be easier to just give everthing away. I've had a few very nice things, like a lamp, etc., on Craigslist for months and no one has even asked about them. I get tired of all this stuff sitting around! Thanks for letting me rant.

It is great what you are doing AleeI have just read my July Cluck and seen your daily cleaning challenge column. That was a great idea there are lots of people who need a little push to get started. My husband and I moved into our house after his parents died 3 years ago this October. He kept putting off going thru boxes of paper work. I mean boxes about 10. So I pulled them out of the attic and said this is it do it now. It took 4 days but the boxes turned into 1 small box. Burned the rest. Lets do it and work together. Lilly thanks
