Yesterday I spent about an hour working on my front porch. The old black wrought iron was grey, my glass & screen door was totally speckled with hard water deposits from rain bouncing up, it was a mess.
After researching online what to do about *old* hard water stains, I ended up trying several things - from yuky old windex to vinegar/water mix, to straight vinegar, to WD-40, to lemon oil! Finally I got the lemon oil to soak in then used a straight razor blade and scraped the water deposits off!! It took me awhile to get all the remaining greasy residue off the glass then and finally resorted to Windex. But, you can see clearly through the glass now!!
Then I found out a cool thing! WD-40 is a great wrought iron polish!! I sprayed it on and ran over it with a saturated paper towel to make sure it was even. From dusty-looking grey to shiny black gloss!! Not greasy!! Really it was a shocking difference, my husband couldn't believe it when he got home. You would seriously think that it had been repainted!
Sadly the whole hour's work did end up costing me... I realized that our desperately old and worn-out looking Welcome mat HAD to be replaced, so I bought a nifty new one at Home Depot  .
Between all that work and my scarlet runnerbeans being trained all over the wrought iron railing, my front porch now looks kinda nice!! Who knew?!!
