So we moved here last fall and I am frustrated with our ugly mailbox. Its really too far to water every day so planting is really out of the question in this heat. And I am not really very handy, what can I do to spruce it up? Anyone got any ideas? Pictures of what youve done to make your mailbox cute? Flags, painting it, signs, artificial flowers (would that be too tacky for words??) come on girls, I need some ideas.
fat people are harder to kidnap.

I have always painted my mailbox, and when my youngest son was in the military and heading for Iraq the first time, I painted it like a flag, and decoed my sons pic in full uniform on it. We got alot of complaments from people including strangers, and when he came home from his second and last tour, I added his pic outa uniform and said hes home. My sister has the same problem as you, to far to water, so she painted vines going up the post with morning glory flowers all over the box, its really cute.

I think you should be able to find some drought tolerant plants and get them started. Paint your mailbox some color that you really like and between the plants and the painting it should be looking good. If you get the mail daily, carrying a bucket of water is good exercise and the plants will be happy too.

That's what I was going to say Betty. Do a bit of research native plants for your area, the kind that grow fine in the wild in your area, and they would be fine!

Native plants is a good idea. Just remember to not plant something that will interfere with the mailman putting stuff in your box. Hubby's a mailman and some people plant stuff that interferes with opening and shutting the box making his job more difficult. Good luck, I'm sure you'll make it beautiful!

If you have a metal mailbox they have megnetic covers with all sorts of pictures to choose from that you can buy, They can be expensive. I am not sure how much. I think they run around $20. My girlfriend loves hers. Our mailman hates when people plant flowers around the mailbox. He said he's been stung by too many bee's to apprecitate the flowers.
Hope all your days are Sunnydays. dianebcarterhotmailcom.blogspot.com |

I've been eyeing mine for a couple years now, I've been wanting to mosaic it! Just haven't had time, and it's not been a priority, just a whimsical thing...so it gets put off, but one day I will tackle it! *** The problem with plants around it, check with your postal service, because out west we weren't allowed to plant flowers around them because of bee allergies that the carriers might have.... In Florida, they plant them with all kinds of things...there's one down the road that is completely covered with that plant like they do topiary stuff at disney...I can't think of the name of it right now...but I drove past it today, and you can't even see the mailbox anymore!!! LOL!

I agree with Diane. I love the magnetic mailbox covers. I change mine with the seasons, and people always know me by my mailbox. It makes my drive easier to find.
