I live in a little community in Nine Mile Falls, WA called Suncrest. It is about 15 miles or so from Spokane. I grew up here and my husband and I wanted to raise our kids here. We live on about an acre and I have a small garden. I dream of a mini farm on the 5 acres that my hubby and I just bought. My fil has the adjoining 5 and we would love to start some organic farming. The problem is it is almost all basalt rock but...where there is a will there is a way.
I have 4 kids (8, 6, twins 3) and am a SAHM. I help my hubby run his parking lot striping business and our rentals. Out kids are adopted and have some needs that take up extra time and energy. I have them help me in the garden as much as possible so they can learn about responsibility and taking care of things. They each have their own special plant that is edible (peppers, peas, tomato, etc) and they get to learn about that plant. I am hoping to have a chicken or two before summers end.
My hubby surprised me the other day calling me farmgirl. He knows how much I love MaryJane's magazine. Then he asked if I would like to go to the farm fair in July when he has some jobs to do in that part of the state. Of course I said yes!! We plan on bringing the kids and haveng a great time. |

Welcome, Maree! It will be good getting to know you. I want some chicks, too! 5 acres along with your FIL's sounds great. Sounds like he's also wanting organic? Your family has some "manpower" for all the work! I expect your children will love farm life. Comments made by kids on chicken web sites always sound so positive--the chicken becomes their best friend sometimes.

Welcome Maree!! How lucky are you that you get to go to farm fair!!
I have adopted kids too..5 of my 7 are adopted ...4 still at home ages 11, 9, 9, and 9.
They all have some special needs but only the youngest has learning disabilities and has come a long way since we got him a year and 1/2 ago. They are such blessings in my life. I always wanted a big family when I was raising my two "homemade" boys and always felt like I just wasn't done being a mom to little kids yet. We have a huge space in the middle of the kids..our older boys are 28 and 26, and then a 21 year old in college.
It will be fun to get to know you here!!

Maree and Jenny, I so admire you both for adopting special needs children! I was a special ed. teacher long ago, emotional and LD being the main problems. I will pray for you both to have strength and wisdom,

Hi, Maree, and welcome! I'm another newbie and live just down the road from you in Spokane - in Franklin Park, by Northtown Mall. Julie out in Medical Lake is starting a Farm Girl chapter - we'll have to see if we can carpool out to the gatherings if you are interested (what with gas being what it is...). I'm going to Farm Fair too; I'll have a booth with my soaps and herbal sundries. So I'll definitely meet you there, if not before! Take care, Judy

Hi Maree,
I grew up in Spokane and every summer all us kids in my neighborhood would bike down past nine mile falls on our way to Deep Creek for a day of hiking and rock climbing. We had good friends that lived there. They were Ralph and Ardella Renn. Maybe if you grew up there you might have known them, but if you are the ages of my children you might not have been born yet when they lived there. They have other family that still lives there though I think. I live over here on the olympic peninsula now however and we have 5 acres that we are taming into a productive place. My husbands parents had an organic farm on basalt like you describe out near cheney the last years of their lives and it seemed to grow really well for them. The ground is just more course and crumbly.
