Hi everyone! I'm glad to have found a group of like-minded people! My family was starting to think I was channeling a previous life or something! Which would make sense if you consider the fact I come from a long line of city dwellers. (I was transplanted young from NYC to Virginia!) I am stuck in the 'burbs but have longed to live on a farm, to live off the land. I guess watching Little House On The Prairie helped fuel my desire to make things. Whether it be "making" things from seed, yarn, fabric, paper, etc... I always look at something and ask if I could make it myself.
I am fortunate enough to have farms nearby. We wake to the sounds of the birds and cows. I am even taking the kids to go strawberry picking this afternoon. Now I just need to figure out the whole canning thing! This should be interesting!
I must confess, being a farmgirl is a bit of a private obsession. My hubby & children have come to accept my seemingly "insane" ideas. When I let slip "Can we have chickens?" they barely rolled an eye. (No chickens-our neighbors wouldn't approve) So for now, I dream and plan and dream some more. I read with interest from everyone sharing their stories of life on their farm. To them I say thank you!

We know how you feel and don't think chickens haven't crossed my mind too!

| Thank you for the warm welcome Karen! I took the family strawberry picking and them made jam with them for the first time. My mom thinks I'm nuts, but my hubby looked at me at one point and said "You must be in heaven" Yup-sure was! I have MJ's book on order and it should be here any day now. I can't wait to see what else I can try! |

Sound yummy, Strawberries are about a month away for us.
My lawn is blooming with strawberries and dandilions as I don't use any chemicals.
Husband thinks it's funny to se me pushing the lawn mower and bend down to pick a few wild strawberries while I'm at it.

Welcome Hayley, Just keep reading and posting and in no time you will be in the mist of everything going on here. You sound like Tasha Tudor, stuck in another time zone. a alot of us have her books. Let us know what you are up to.

Welcome Hayley! As you said in my post, it's great to see someone from the Old Dominion, especially someone that's right up 522 mostly. One of these days I'll make it up to Fredricksburg, I've wanted to visit up there for some time now.
You know, you'd think where I'm located there'd be a lot of U-Pick places, but it's at least an hours drive to any of them. Same thing for Farmer's Markets. :( I miss them. We used to go to them when we were little with mom, and I also missed the veggie stands with corn and tomatoes when we visited relatives in Maryland. *sigh* I have to admit, I'm partially thinking about trying to figure out a way to start a little farmer's market around here...problem is, most places around here still grow tobacco.

Thank you everyone for such a welcome!
I have heard of Tasha Tudor but haven't read any of her books. Next time I'm at the library, I'll have to look her up.
My hubby is really having a chuckle over my new "antics". After the canning fiasco that ruined 2 shirts and a pair of jeans, I ran to the thrift store and bought a skirt that I'm turning into aprons. I was able to use the front and back, so for $4, I get 2 aprons! YAY! |

I am new too...We moved last summer to an old farm house..with 7 acres and an old barn..I wanted chicken then too..my hubby though I was nuts...my daughters class this past spring..hatched chicks to see their life cycle from egg to bird...and we got to bring home 3 chick last week..they are 4 weeks old and I know nothing :). but have a recommended book on order on how to raise chickens.i thnk we need to build a coop...they are doing so far so good...we will see.

I totally agree with the like minded people phrase. How nice it is to connect with ones who not only understand, but share your passions. I also credit Little House for the prairie farmgirl in me. I no longer watch much TV, but I loved that show when I was growing up.No one believes me when I say I could live just like that.Unfortunately my family doesn't feel the way I do, but oh well. I'm getting too old to fight the feeling! I asked my daughter one day if she thought I was crazy and she just looked at me with 14 year old wisdom and said,"That's just you Mom, that's who you are." We have shared a whole new since of bonding since that day. I have always told my husband I wanted a farm,(I think he thought I would just get over it), and I'll never forget the day that he realized I was truly serious....You've heard the expression "deer in the headlights look". I can only be who I am and hope they all understand. Follow your farmgirl dreams with all your heart.
It's nice to chat with you and you are close to me (I'm in Chesapeake) you'll have to come visit our farm one day. We are in the process of building a full working farm on twenty acres here. The goings a little slow but we are fiercely determined.

Hi Haley .. welcome gurlfren! are you in the D.C. "suburbs" .. i lived in Annapolis, Maryland for many, many years .. had 'the river and the bay' .. and the ocean to lull us to sleep at night .. now we're in kentucky .. with only the sounds of birds and frogs chirping and croaking at night .. and my most favorite sound in the world .. rain on a TIN ROOF! i dearly love both lifestyles and feel blessed to have been able to experience both ... soooo .. enjoy fully your life as it is now .. and keep dreaming about that 'chapter' in your book of life that you wish for in the country! WELCOME!

I too am in the Old Dominion. Know where Fredricksburg and Mineral are located! I was laughing when you said you wanted chickens. I want them too! We have a bird sanctuary and protected watershed on our back three acres. Not allowed to cut timber, but hmmmm....maybe we can have birds? It is a bird sanctuary! LOL. Your strawberry jam sounds wonderful! We have a berry farm just about 30 minutes from here. Say Jennifer in Mineral should take 288 south to the Hull street west exit and she could be out to the Chesterfield berry farm in no time at all!! I'm a Home Care nurse and know the route well! Anyway, welcome to you from another newbie. Hope you get your chickens!!
