I think it all depends. I know of older women who look just fine with colored hair, but others it is so off the wall that it looks crazy. (Although I know plenty of "younger" women I could say the same for!) I think you should do what YOU want to do :) If you want to color it, by all means have it done! But if you think your gray coming in is lovely, then keep that!!

Melody, I am now my early 50's and I am trying so hard to fight the age thing. I am not taking the "old" thing well at all. I have dark blonde hair with gray, I get the high and low lights in mine, that way I keep some of my natual color but the highlights/low lights cover up the gray. I dont spend alot of money on myself but this is one thing I will do as long as I can afford to. It makes me feel better about myself. Do you like your hair the way it is? I have always said that a woman needs to be happy with herself first. If you like your hair then dont color. My hubby ask me when will I stop doing this (picking at me) = and I say when I am broke!

Hey Melody . . . I agree with Susie. Do what YOU want to do!!! I'm sure there are many who would say you should color it and many who say you shouldn't. But, what do you want!! If you like your hair and the way you look then tell your DD so . . . I have NEVER colored my hair and NEVER will . . . I have gray and lots of shades of brown that is natural for me. My hair is naturally so many shades that it would be a difficult task to color it and have it look halfway natural. I look older than I want sometimes but that is usually when my SPIRITS have taken a tromping and I'm tired or discouraged outta my mind or something like that.
I tell folks that, YES, I HAVE GRAY HAIR . . . they are my SILVER REWARD for the experiences of my life and I EARNED EVERY ONE OF THEM!!!!! YAY!!! YAY!!! YAY!!!
So, what's your sweet, caring Farmgirl heart telling you!!! CJ

If you decide to color with it you need to stick with it. My MIL is in her late 60s and is totally gray but it is a dark gray. She colors her hair a platinum blond color but doesnt stay on top of it. When the roots begin to show I think it looks worse than when she didnt color it at all.

I love the silver streaks in my hair-It is a nice silver color just like my mother had when she was in her 50's. I have been thinking about this all afternoon, I just never thought of myself as looking old...I don't feel "old."
When I asked my son "Do I look old to you?" He said "Not at all mom and DON'T color your hair!" My husband on the other hand said "Well you were talking about coloring your hair a while back."
Hmmmmmmph!
No...I am not going to color the grays--------This is me!
Thank you girls-I always feel so much better after I post and hear from you!!

Melody I stopped coloring my hair about a year ago and left it all grow in. The color is very platinum gray with some dark areas here and there. I just wasn't liking the fake look of the color on my gray. Believe it or not I have had so many compliments on my hair since I left it grow out. One woman said I just Love your haircut and color. What color is it? I said it's gray! I do wear my hair in a spikey cut which always gets a nice comment. I have to admit sometimes when I pass a mirror I gasp and say , Who the heck is that? LOL. Do whatever you feel comfortable with and as long as you have a good haircut it will look beautiful. Darlene |

Melody, I think whatever you are comfortable with is what you should do. If you want to color your hair because you think it would look better, then do that. But if you like the natural look of your hair, then keep it natural. Don't color your hair based on one tiny comment. God's Blessings, Megan aka Loretta Rae

I'm only 33 and have gray hairs tryin to form a silver streak. My older sis had a major skunk streak about 3 inches wide right down the middle of her head by the time she was 37! Neither of us will color our hair because my little sis is a beautician and she says it can clog, burn, and deform the hair follicals leading to hair loss. She said there are a lot of people who it doesn't effect, but the choice is a personal one. Just please, really watch your scalp and the thickness of your hair. If the damage is noticed early it can be stopped.

It is your head you have to wear it evey day, so it is your decision. I don't color mine, because I don't like that root line that shows up in about 3-4 weeks, then when you try to color that and you end up with bands of different colors. Maybe all you need is a new haircut, IF you want one. I almost 58, my hair is gray, I keep it very short, because this is what I want. And I earned every one of those gray hairs, working, paying bills, raising my kids and being involved with my extended family. The last time my (38 yr old)son said "Mom why don't you color your hair?" I said I am the one who looks at it every day, it is mine, and it is none of your business. He hugged me and said "you are absolutely right, that's why I love you, you were never one to do follow the crowd, you do what you want and that's what makes you my mom."

I say color away!! I have colored my hair for years now. I have a dark blonde/light golden brown color naturally and the grey looked fine for a long time but it's taking over now. It makes me feel lots better about myself, so I do it. I used to make a circle of light brown to blonde to slightly reddish (maybe a strawberry color) and then back to brownish. Now, I stick with golden blonde.
You're in fine company if you do!!
There are products out there that you try out and it washes out in a few shampoos. That would be a lot of fun, I should think. ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif)

I say if you think coloring your hair would be fun, go for it! My hair is a mix of dark blonde and gray....I color it a pretty copper red blonde and I love it. It really helps warm up my skintone and eyecolor....and my husband says it matches my personality!

I agree with all the others...do what makes YOU feed good. My hair is dark dark brown and has silver here and there now..not really in clumps or stripes...just a hair here and there. I am 51. Since it never was much at all until now when I am starting to notice it more I guess I won't start coloring it now. If it had gone very gray when I was alot younger I might have felt different. Never have colored it yet though..so I guess I won't. Have fun what ever you decide to do!

If you are thinking of coloring your hair, do some research on the ingred. of the color treatment and see how toxic it is. I am getting pretty gray and I will just keep it natural. I agree I look old when the world beats up on me emotionally or if I am really tired. like now.....miss kris

Oh... I am sorry Miss Kris! I agree about feeling old and looking old on occasion and of course don't you know we do wear our stress on our faces! Which can't be helped!
Please get some rest-you sound all done in, and I appreciate your post!
...Listen Kris if you need to talk just e-mail me. I may be gray and feeling dumpy but I am STILL a great listener!

Hey Melody :)
I am 46 and have been getting gray for the past couple of years. I personally like it (my honey does too!) and stopped coloring last year. At times, I am tempted to color but I look at it this way "God colors my hair" :)
Do whatever makes YOU feel comfortable :)

I get highlights at an Aveda salon about 3-4 times a year. Their coloring is significantly less harsh. As a blonde, I always thought brunettes with gray looked much better than blondes. It just makes us look so much more washed out. I haven't been since Dec 18th, as the last time, she cut my hair WAY too short & I hated it on me (great cut, but just not for me) I have 2 weddings coming up, so I guess I need to do something.
