I was just curious: of the farmgirls on here who homeschool (or did), so you do school year round or do you take the summer off? Or is it kind of a gray area because of the "way you homeschool"?

We were year round because of the way we homeschooled. Every day was a learning day at our house. =)

We took the whole month of May or June and December off as they were our busiest months, and took other time out as we needed it. Every year was different!

... we did year long! Because everything and everywhere was schooling on hand. We did field trip on the first or second day when public school went back in fall... no crouds at the zoo or aquarium...

Thanks for the responses so far. The only reason I ask is because we also do school year round and I get the weirdest looks from relatives. "Don't you ever give your kids a break?" they ask. I try to explain to them that our school is different from what they think of as school. (And even if we were to sit down and do something that looked a bit more like "actual school", the boys would be done in an hour, not six.) But mostly for us, the lines between school and not school are so blurred here that it would be impossible for me to say we weren't doing school year round. They are always learning, and since we incorporate so many different ways to have that learning happening, it can't really be "shut off" for the summer.
I was just wondering what everyone else did - and if there were any "evil" all year rounders like me! ;)

We are an all year family too. We also get a lot of flack off family. Only ours was for 'not doin' school at all. We were told that they couldn't learn anything at the zoo, in the garden, at the museum, so forth. It bothered me that these same people thought their children learned something when the school took them there, but not my kids when I took them there. I am even gonna be takin my older girls to the farmers market with me to learn about commerce and how to run a business. I love year round methods, they allow you to live your life whatever way works best for your family. Plus you can take advantage of lower pricing at places and on vacations by going during the 'down' hours.

LOL Natesgirl - Love what you said about the field trip to the museum being educational when the school does it but not when we do it. I totally get that too. Or when they say "What did you do in school today" to my kids and they say "We went to the grocery store and helped mom get her whole list for under $40 by following coupons and sales" and they say "That's not school"...but then complain that their kids at PS don't learn any math that is "real life". Um....what??

We're "terrible" too  & school year round. We school a total of 36 weeks (180 days), so that's 9 wks per qtr (of which there are 13 wks per qtr) --can ya tell I'm a bit OCD & have had to explain our schooling situation more than once? (lol) So basically my kids have have 4 wks off per qtr. It makes life so much easier when things like colds or vacations pop up & we have the flexibility of not doing "make up" work (& it gives me a sanity break --lol). Also, at September "back to school" time, I'm not doing the "two step backwards, one step forward" dance because my lil dumplings can't remember squat from the summer (lol)

When we HS'd, we did so all year round. But I also unschooled so we were always learning even if it wasnt what traditionally is considered "book learning" if you kwim.

I met a woman today who is just startin in homeschoolin and wanted to know if I do any summer learnin, as her Hubby is an elementary school teacher and wants to be involved in it. I told her we do schoolin 2-4 days a week year round however fits our schedule. She was thrilled to know how flexible you can really be. She showed me all the stuff the schools throw away every year that her Hubby brings home. She gave me a lot of stuff she had doubles of. The schools throw out all the used flash cards, book sets that are only missin 1 book (she had 4 complete sets made up of 6 he brought home), crayons and colored pencils that don't even look used, even pads of paper with only a page or two missin! They say the kids might have chewed on things so they have to go. She's put together her own cirriculum from their leftovers and passed on a bunch of very expensive items to me that will easily fit into a free learning style we use. It seems homeschooling means free thinking to nearly everyone.

We seem to homeschool year round, but officially take July off, where we travel, and spend a lot of time swimming, etc. For us, almost everywhere we go is a learning opportunity, and you can call it "homeschooling" even during the summer! We try and stick to a more rigid schedule of completing curriculum we choose during the traditional school year, but even with that, we are very flexible and change things up as we see fit! I love homeschooling!

Hi Ladies!
We school year round as well. People ask us how that works all the time. I too really like keeping up with math and not letting it go on vacation mode for too long! We usually are off for part of June and July as it coincides with our VBS and 4th of July festivities with my husband's family. December is generally a lighter month and our studies revolve more around Christmas, which is still learning, but not something that the ps kids do. We also take time off whenever we feel the need to. I love the flexibility and the kids easily fall back into our school routine...most of the time! We also go in cycles where we concentrate on certain subjects more than others for a while to mix it up. The kids like the change of pace and learn a lot in a small amount of time.
It's nice to see so many like-minded moms here!

We try to do more "fun" subjects over the summer, more science activities, cooking, sewing, etc...wish we could visit more places over summer, too, but my husband is in lawn care & carpentry, & summer is a very busy time for him, though moneys not been there the last few years to go anywhere, anyway! We try to do alot of swimming, etc. It's so hot in Florida that we can't do much else outside right now! I am encouraged to hear from others homeschool mamas & their styles/stories...

We go year round too. I take it a little easier on them during the summer and of course around the Holidays.
It just makes things so much more flexible, and I think the kids enjoy making "school" out of what is going on around them at any given time.

We do year round as it makes it so much easier for my son to take time off in large chunks to visit his dad in Florida twice per year. Then of course we take mini-breaks when needed.

This is our first year, but we are going to be doing it year round. Being in south Texas, it is so blooming hot in the mid-summer. We spend lots of time indoors. So this is a good time for books and such. From Oct - Apr, the weather is great and places aren't crowded. So we go somewhere at least once a week. Some days we don't hit the books, we just do something. We went to chick and rabbit days at the feed stores today.
