Hello all,
I purchased 14 turkey poults 3 weeks ago, so they are 3 1/2 weeks old. Upon inspection this afternoon it appears that one has a broken leg. It is not acting like it is in pain, but I'm sure it is. I separated it out from the others, but most of the information I've found says to euthanize the bird. I really do not want to do this. I do not know anyone else who has or has had turkeys to ask.
Please help.

Once I had a chick with a deformed leg and I found a web site that told me how to splint it. Maybe google some thing like "home made poultry splint?" Good luck, hope she does ok, Carol
Forget buns of steel, I'd rather have buns of cinnamon!

unfortunatly, most likely you will have to euthanize, turkeys carry alot of weight, and they grow fast so the leg can't keep up with healing, plus having hollow bones, the chance for infection is very high, I'm sorry.

Ashley, so sorry this happened. I had gotten some almost grown turkeys from a friend a few years back and one had a broken leg. It had been broken for awhile. And it lived several months after. But one day I went out to feed them and it was dead. So I don't know. It's so sad. I never could kill it. I guess I should have. But it never looked in pain and the others never hurt it.
I am going to call the turkey people tomorrow and see if they have anymore yet.

So sorry Ashley, I have dealt with the same from a fancy chick, and from a meat chick. I tried to mend the fancy chick. It did not live long. I was sorry I didn't just let hime go from the get go.
I let nature take its course on the meat hen, she lived as long as as the other meat chicks. She also took care of all new babies while her. She was a joy.

It is a sad day in the barn...Thanks for all of your well wishes.
Kris: I hope you do get your birds. Turkeys are fun and the kids love to help with them. I have noticed that they will come up and hang out with us as long as we all use really soft voices. Maybe your grandkids will enjoy them, too.
