Hi Girls -
I'm posting here and also in the bartering section. I've been given a raw fleece and have never cleaned and carded before. The only spinning I have done is from already prepared roving. Do any of you have a set of hand carders you would like to sell or barter?
Thanks! Luanne

Thanks Grace!
I'm really new at this, so, is there a difference between hand cards and combs?

Very nice combs Monica! Luanne, I'm always looking to see if there is something else I already have to at least practice with. I was thinking about the wide tooth hair combs, the ones with the big handle on the one end... Or maybe use a couple small blocks of wood and the big heavy ten penny nails,I'd pre-drill the blocks first. That way you still play with your wool until you can get the real thing!
Grace & Monica, I hope I'm not leading Luanne a stray...Please correct me if I'm off base. I have been thinking about combing and carding down the road myself.
Almost forgot actual wire dog brushes will work for carding in a pinch too. Karen

Hi Karen -
Thanks for the suggestions. I have some of those hair picks so maybe I'll give that a try on a little bit of the wool just to see what happens.
Thanks! Luanne

Karen, Thank you and you are not off base at all! I made my first pair of combs with some scraps of wood, my husbands drill motor and some nail I swiped form him! You don't necessarily need heavy nails. I use 16d 3 1/4" bright finish nails for the combs I sell. In a pinch, large dog brushes can double for hand carders! The hair picks would work to fluff open the wool as long as you don't load it up to much otherwise the teeth bend or break!

I might jump in with my two cents.. Cards work best if the fiber is not longer then 3 to 4 inches - when you get longer then that you are going to make a mess. That is why combs then work so well - they can handle those longer lengths and also are great for getting smaller VM out of the fibers. If you wish to use cards then for now you can get just two dog brushes that look like paddles that are made for double coated dogs - I start my students out on those first. If your know how to spin out of the fold then just use on dog comb and flick out each end of a staple length and you can spin out of the fold without much prep work. If you have the longer staple length and are using a hair pick like Monica stated be careful that you do not over load them because they will break (that is if they are plastic) unless you have some metal ones.
Good luck and let us know how it goes. I have spent the day in front of my Patrick Green Picker and Carder and I'm in heaven.
