I'm not quite sure about July 17th but will get back to you all this week. I was thinking of making it a mini vacation with my family but then I realized that my hubby would not want to entertain the kids alone while I was out and about and I wouldn't want to have to cut my time short with you all. So I'm going to ask my sister (who is a farmgirl at heart too....but isn't on this forum) is she would like to make it a day with me! I will get back this week when I figure out if it will work!

I spoke to my sister and she sounded excited and is going to ask for that day (the 17th) off from work. So, as of now, it looks like we will be able to come! I looked on Mapquest and it looks about 88 miles from here, so it isn't *too far* for me. :)

Do you mind if a Kansas City farmgirl joins in??

I visit N.E.IA a lot. We are by West Union and Clermont.
Go to Kalona for the cattle autions sometimes.
Thought I would ask before I just showed up.

We just had the Farmgirls on the Loose in the Midwest tour and landed in Decorah. Wish there would have been a group to stop and see on the way to KC.
Love meeting farmgirls from all over.

Thanks for a reply.

you are very welcome to join us. We camp also at clermont as my husband has a friend with a hunting cabin there. We go up there several times a year.

Farmgirl friends are fun.

I went to Mapquest & put in Kansas City to Kalona. But I wasn't crazy about the directions. Here is a simplified version. Please correct ladies if I have any of it wrong.
I35N to I80E
Take exit 380S/218? to Kalona.Turn Right onto Hwy 1.
Take Hwy 1 SW.
Follow this into Kalona.

Rochelle, You are the only one we don't have down-does the 17th work for you?
Is there anyone else that we need to check with? I went back & looked at the posts & tried to get everyone?
It is getting closer-3 weeks away!

I am in for the 17th...sounds like such a fun day. Yes, I mean the Bakery downtown although I know there is also the Golden Bakery lcoated in th country. It is well marked like everything else in Kalona. Central Discounts hours are 8-3 on Saturday. The Cheese Factory is about 3/4 of a mile away for it. If we head out Hiighway #1 (towards Ia. City ) that will take us directly to Sisters Garden... a "shabby chic" inspired spot which has 2 shops. Down the road from there is The Rug Cottage/Barntiques...very fun place and the owners are oh so nice !!! I LOVE the way they have their wares displayed, especially in the Barn. They have things arranged as if you are in an actual room of a home. Awesome !!! They usually have free samples of flavored coffees, their own sugar -free,yummy Iowa produced jams, etc. And this isn't even talking about what is in Kalona !!!
How about trying to meet at the Kalona Bakery in downtown Kalona around 7:30 AM ? (Kalona is NOT that big so it will not be hard to locate.) There is a main intersection in the business district and the Bakery is on the street heading east-west across the street from the pharmacy. Not too hard to find and has great cinnamon rolls. We'll have a cup of coffee & whatever and go from there. I'll get there earlier and have some cute bandanas(red or pink, ladies???) we can wear to identify one another...as a neck scarf, headband, rolled necklace. I will also bring canvas bags for shopping purchases ( I have a secret plan to decorate them for all of us... I LOVE doing stuff like this !!!! It will be my pleasure, girls.)
Wear comfortable shoes and you may want to bring a small cooler if you decide to pick up some cheese, etc. I'm definitely bringing my camera.
Come one, come all, and let's make this "inaugural" event spectacular !!!!

I say red-I already have one! Have you been to the country store also? Or Stringtown? 7:30 is pretty early for me-I have a 2 hour drive. But if that works for everyone I will make it work. Does that work for you Lin? How long will it take you to get there?

We can change that meeting time to 9:00 AM. That would be better for all, I'm sure. I've been to Stringtown(bulk foods, some organic produce, all run by sweet Amish farmgirls) & The Country Store (homebaked goods.sewing notions, kitchen wares, some awesome books for kids, handamde outdoor furniture, bulk cheese,Amish clothes). In outline form :

Date : Sat. July 17th
Time : 9 - ?
Location : Kalona, Iowa Our meeting point will be the Kalona Bakery for coffee & cinnmaon rolls.
Bring: Comfortable shoes, cooler for cheese, camera, plenty of trunk space
Miscellaneous : There is a motel In Kalona, and acouple of campgrounds nearby for our out of
sisters.
Also, Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa, is about 15-20 minutes away
from Kalona, Amana Colonies is approximately 30-40 minutes.

I'm getting my air conditioning fixed in the van this week. Yesterday, when it was hot and sticky, we went out of town and I was drenched in sweat and felt sick by the time we got to where we were going. I figure with a close to two hour ride ahead of me I want to arrive not soaked in sweat! lol

My sister is looking forward to it as well and it will be a nice girls get away for us!
