Through the years, many gifts I have received have been crystal, and victorian, and lacy. Not that I do not like them. Wonderful gifts! But I long for someone to give me quilts and pottery and homespun and aprons.

Do you get mistaken for fancy when you are really down home?

Yes. I would so much rather have pottery too. That's why I would rather get my own gifts. But I do love the things my family gives me. I just don't think they know me too well. Although, they are getting better. For Mother's day my youngest gave me a picture made of broken tiles with a rooster painted on it. And the oldest gave me a little box with a Bible verse in it. And I got a glass tea pot with the infuser. Really great gifts. So it's getting better. So yes, I know exactly what you mean here.

I guess I've been lucky, my family has always known to give me country and practical, my favorite things, a plant instead of cut flowers, something homemade with love, instead of store bought, something funny instead of sterile, a hug and kiss, instead of a phone call.

I'd much rather have something homemade. Any day!!! Especially a homemade quilt. I would cuddle forever. LOL.

For 13 years I have been asking for Christmas, birthdays, Mother's Day, Earth Day, Labor Day, 4th of July, Presidents' Day, Johnny Appleseed Day - for my family to give me the old fashioned type of clothesline that is made of two 'T's of welded metal with loops for wire, embedded in concrete in the backyard (Okie wind does a number on anything not held down like glue). I have yet to receive this most treasured item because my family thinks that it isn't nice enough - fancy enough - to call a gift. And so, I get things like a Kitchenaid Mixer - well - ok - so not such a bad gift, scratch that, an I-Phone, a beautiful necklace, a television set....I like to hang out clothes. Is that so wrong?? :-)

Yes, yes and YES! I am so very vocal about what I like and yet I keep getting things like jewelery! Very nice jewelery, but I hardly ever wear it. Except for earrings, I rarely wear jewelery of any kind.

And little Lenox candy dishes? I want stoneware crocks for my kitchen!

I do good to even get gifts much less get what I like!

I get a good mixture of both...but then again, I am a mixture of both so it all works out well for me

If not me...then who?
If not now...then when?

I get the occasional country gift, but mostly I get electronic things. This year I'm asking for canning jars. Probably won't get them either. Oh well, I am not beyond returning things.

I read a great line in a countryish type magazine that SO describes me. She was talking about her dented and battered, yet lovely old table. Anyway she stated "I can appreciate the fine polished furniture but I truly LOVE the humble". That is me to a "T". Give me used, battered, bruised yet beautiful with a nice patina and great history over new stuff anyday!

I guess I am lucky my family is pretty good about my gifts. I get quilts, books, pottery mugs, boxes of pretty antique linens from the thrift store, really cool straw hats. I once even got a horse. A real live horse. My DH finally gave in and got me one. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving.

I guess I'm pretty lucky - my family gives me tools like viking combs for my wool, addi turbo knitting needles, knitting pattern books, vintage lace yardage and insertions, glue guns, parts for my tractor....the best one of all was my 50th birthday present - a custom made pair of authentic knee high victorian boots that lace up in kid leather.(think Diana Berry in the cow pasture in Anne of Green Gables) One year my mother got me a set of authentic button shoes and button hook. This year my daughter sent me money to buy a couple of sheep to add to my spinners flock. Anything Edwardian or late Victorian or crafty. They know me so well.

Blessings, Sheri

Hmmm, I'm with you on pottery. Maybe when you're out looking next time with your friends and family at various shops make a particular show of oohing and awing over pottery and maybe say something that this has more character than glassware and how much you love pottery, they might get the hint :)
