Do any of you make bread in the bread machines? I had a wonderful bread machine. It was damaged in the flood, and I cannot remember the name of the machine. So, if any of you do have a bread machine, please share with me the name, if you like it, etc... Thank you all so much.

I have a Oster for the past ten years and LOVE it!!! Since my log home is not always the warmest in the winter it is great for keeping the temp even for the rising of the bread and also allows me to keep up with the other work that the farm demands. If this machine was not in my home I would be forced to purchase that so called bread from the store - Yuck!

Good luck on your bread machine quest.

Mine comes from the Regal Kitchen Pro collection. I like but it is the only one I have ever had so I can't compare.

Breadman - but the rotary blade just froze up and I ordered a spare baking pan with new rotary rod. In the meantime, I began kneading the dough and letting it rise by itself, and then baking. This happened because I had a bread dough ready and in the machine when it broke down. I did not want to waste 4 cups of flour, etc, so I kneaded it by hand and let it rise on the stovetop......I got the best dough I have ever had!!!! It baked up light and good. I just may leave my bread machine behind!!!

Thanks farmgirls. The bread machine I had, I can't remember the name of it, made long loaf bread. It was so, so good. I'm trying to find a picture of the bread machine, to no avail. Thanks for the help. I will check out online the names of the bread machines y'all have mentioned.

Goldman Automatic Breadmaker, This thing is older than the hills but it works great. I only use mine to mix and knead the dough, then I put the dough in pans to rise and bake. I would look into the Oster brand, I have heard good things!!!

Your local library can be a great place to find bread machine recipes. I was looking at one last week.

I have a bread machine that was turned into a MOPS rummage sale that we were having. It had not sold and the girls told me to take it. I have no idea what kind it is. It is still packed. I have been wanting to get it out and try it.

Lets help each other.

What is the best recipe to try first?

I have a Zojirushi also & I love it. I have the upright one but they make one that makes a long loaf also. It came out a couple of years after I got mine-aometimes wish I had waited but oh well. I sometimes take mine out & bake it in a regular pan when I need a regular looking loaf.

I have a Cuisinart Convection Bread Maker and really love it. I thought I would share with you a wonderful bread machine roll recipe and they freeze very well too.

Bread Machine Rolls

1 cup Water (lukewarm)

1 Egg

2 Tbsp. Butter or Margarine

3 1/4 cup Flour

1/4 cup Sugar

1 tsp. Salt

3 tsp. Yeast

Use Dough Cycle. Add ingredients in order as listed.

Divide onto large cookie sheet. Let rise 40 minutes.

Bake 12 minutes @ 350°

Small rolls make about 1 1/2 dozen.

Larger rolls make about 1 dozen.

I had a machine, but gave it away. I think it was a Revel. My bread always had a doughy center and decided making it by hand was my favorite way.

Thisis totally inspiring me. Marly, when you get your machine, let me know. We eat a ton of bread...all store bought!! I know, don't hate me. I have this thing about yeast.. There it is. I admit it! I don't know what it is. I either boil the yeast dead or the water is too cold and the little yeasties just sit there and do nothing. I cannot seem to find a happy inbetween!!! So bread machine might be the way for me...When you say pricey are we talking 200 - 400 dollars?????? I'm thinking late mother's day gift or anniversary gift!!

Sending cheer! ~julia

I'm still looking for a bread machine. I did have one, but it went out with one of the floods. I miss the baked bread. The one I had made the best loaf bread. I like white bread, too. I've written all the different types that everyone said they have. So, when I get time, I'll check each one out. By doing so, I might see a picture of one, and realize it was the one I had. Thanks, again, farmgirls.

I found mine and it is a West Bend America's Best.

It didn't have a manual. I found a great site called Hillbillyhousewife.com and I printed a post called What to do when your manual is missing. It looks to be a great site for info and recipes.

I hope this helps.

This is a great thread. I wish I had tuned in when I unpacked my bread machine after leaving it 'fallow' for a few years. Mine is an older West Bend that I bought when bread machines first came out. One thing that always plagued me was that MY bread would not rise like others I saw in pictures. Just recently I found the cure...letting the yeast, sugar and warm water sit for a full 10 minutes before adding the rest of the ingredients. What a difference. The yeast bubbles and fluffs up and made a huge difference in every loaf/every recipe.

So, here is my basic recipe. You can add other things to it like...oats, 7 grain cereal etc. I don't change the amount flour. I also prefer butter over oils.

Shery's Basic Bread Machine BREAD:

1C warm water
2Tbsp sugar
1 pkt of yeast (or 1 tsp)
1/4 C melted butter (add last)
3C flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
*2 TBsp 7-grain cereal or rolled oats

Place warm water, sugar, yeast in machine container - let rest for 10 minutes. Add rest of ingredients - butter last. Bake bread on 'basic setting', medium brown crust.

We live at 4,500 ft in elevation. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. I always loved the idea of home-made bread, but I could never get into the process of flour all over and the rest of the ordeal. I admit it. The bread machine along with several other modern conveniences are something this farmgirl likes about the modern era. My grandma said once with a twinkle in her eye and a smile, "The so called good old days that young folks refer to was mostly a lot of work!" She never thought twice about falling in love with her wringer washing machine, electric dryer, electric toaster, coffee maker, refrigerator, chest freezer etc...all 'cutting edge' technology at the time. My grandad had to be one of the very first to own a remote TV controller...as he had one when I was a kid (I'm now 54). Like them, I really do appreciate many modern appliances - while most kitchen gadgets are more work to clean up than they're worth!

I'm so very sentimental about much of what I fondly recall in my childhood...doing things the old fashioned way with my grandparents, but making bread the old way isn't one of them :o) Now, egg noodles, that's another thing entirely. Gotta be hand-rolled, air dried, nice and thick too. I guess everyone has their own set of 'druthers'. Hope all you farmgirls have a good day.

Oh! One more thing!...Before you buy new, there are GOBS of used bread machines for sale on eBay since a lot of people just never used them like they thought they would. They are very inexpensive -- just take the shipping charges into account when you look at the listings. I bought a used BUNN coffee maker on eBay and it was clean and ready to go. I buy a LOT on eBay. Living out in the middle of 'Nowhere' has many benefits, but good shopping isn't one of 'em. shery jespersen

Thanks for the advice Shery.

My machine worked great except the second rise didn't. I just threw a boxed mix in. I didn't remember to check the date on it. Who knows how long it sat on the shelf. But I didn't want to waste buying ingredients when I didn't know if the machine worked. So I used a 2.00 mix. Hubby ate it anyways. But now I know.

Hi everyone!

This is my first post here.

I have a Panasonic bread machine. It is older than the hills and still works great. I think it was one of the first few that came out on the market years ago. I rarely use a full cycle. Usually I just do a dough cycle, put it in a pan to rise and bake in the oven. The crust isn't so thick and crunchy that way.

I have learned that I can make my own bread mixes by putting the dry ingredients from my favorite recipe into a zip loc sandwich bag. I usually make around 6 mixes at a time and put them in a gallon size zip loc bag in the freezer. When you're ready to use them, let the mix get to room temperature and add your yeast, butter, honey and water. I even reuse the sandwich bags . . just put them back in the gallon bag until you are ready to make more mixes. One mess . . . six batches of bread.

Here's my favorite recipe:

Light Wheat Bread
1 1/4 c. whole wheat flour (I used graham flour)
1 1/4 c. bread flour
1 T. dry milk
1 t. salt
1 T. butter
1 T. molasses (I use honey most of the time)
1 c. water
1 t. dry yeast
Even though I use bread flour, I usually add 1 T. of vital wheat gluten.

Enjoy!

I used 3 T of gluten as most yeasts are now gluten free. It will state such on the package.

We went to serveral church rummage sales and a couple of thrift shops today. There were bread machines almost everywhere we went. They averaged to be about $5.00 each.

Saw a Breadman and an Oster at Kohls.

The Breadman was 129.00 It was stainless steel. It had a fruit/nut option. It was pretty fancy. It made a two pound loaf.

The Oster was 89.00. It also made a two pound loaf.

Hope this helps.
