+Update+
All test so far have been positive for a type of kidney disease called glomerulonephritis. The glomrulos? are the filters on the top of each kidney. They filter the protiens and "stuff" out of our blood. Kira's glomerlos are not filtering for some reason. Sort of like a vacum cleaner that works but the HEPA filter is clogged. The dirt is picked up but the toxins are not collected and pass through. The good news we got is that her kidney fuction is fine. The bad news is that these filters are not working properly. She is schedualed for a kidney biopsy on 05/25 which should give us a final diagnosis. The periatric nephrologist is hopeful that medication will help. It depends on the results of the biopsy. There is a kind of glomerulonephritis that is very serious necessitating dialysis and posible transplant. Her physican believes that this is not the case for my daughter and medication and diet modification will help. I appreciate your prayers. Please continue on untill we get through the biopsy and definitive diagnosis. Kira is enjoying the time off from school for all the tests. |

Connie, Thanks so much for the update! I will be praying for a positive outcome - we need to be optimistic! When will she finish her school year? Our grandkids are out the end of May here in Georgia.

Had biopsy yesterday. Doctor said she may get the results today and if so will let me know. I will post as soon as I get the diagnosis. |

Just got the final diagnosis. My daughter has Focal Segmental Glomerulo Sclerosis, commonly referred to as FSGS. This is an uncommon form of Chronic kidney disease found primarily in males and most common in African American males (go figure, my daughter is a very pale, blond, blue-eyes girl). Only 5400 cases are diagnosed in a year. Her case is an agressive form and overy half of the filters in her kidney are dead due to scarring. Without treatment, her kidneys will fail in, on average, 5-6 years, but with the amount of scarring Kira has, kidney failure would happen in about thre years. Treatment is non-exsistant, as it is an auto-immune disease disease in which the body attacks itself. Massive doses of steroids can sometimes put it into remission (in about 50-60% of cases). She at some point will almost certainly need diaylsis. Kidney transplantation is also an option, but since it is an auto-immune disease, often the body will attack the new, good kidney. This will most certainly affect her life as will the side effect of massive doses of Prednisone. I'm cryinmg an shaking so badly thazt I really can't write more right now but I appreciate the c are and concern you have given us. Will see the Nephrologist next week and will update them. Not the diagnosis or prognosis we had hoped for we will deal with the cards we are delt. |

Connie, I am so sorry that you got such a disheartening diagnosis for your daughter. I am going to add her to my nightly prayer and have some friends and family lift her up in prayer too. Hang in there mama. Hold onto hope. Let us know what you hear from the nephrologist. (((Hugs)))
