I work in Richland, Washington, but spend part of my time in Sweetwater, Idaho (24 miles south of Lewiston, Idaho) where my family has been for four generations. I was researching work opportunities in the Lewiston area when I came across Mary Jane's Farm website a few years ago. I am getting closer to finishing college looking forward to my final career, and plan to try to move back to Lewiston next year. In the process of continuing my employment search, I again came across the MJF site and decided to further investigate. The website spoke to my heart - I am a farm girl at heart and I miss it sooo much. I left many years ago to pursue life and career, but each time I return to Sweetwater, Idaho (population 80) I have a very difficult time leaving. I just want to be THERE, helping neighbors, planning community events, learning about growing tomatoes with my father, laughing with my relatives and neighbors, smelling the wide open country air (including the manure ;-D). This website is my connection to those roots and the place I yearn to be full time. Thanks to Mary Jane and her staff for making this website a reality! It keeps me focused and moving in the direction back to where I know I am meant to be! Sister #1320

Welcome to this wonderful site. Sounds like you need to follow your heart to find your happiness. Hopefully you will be able to find a job that will keep you grounded. I understand how hard the job market is now - have one son still in college. Our other son finally found a job after six months post college graduation. Sending you hugs and good luck, Barbara

I stumbled across the MJF mag as a freebie that was given to me. I have three girls and my two youngest have health issues that don't allow me to get out a lot. I seen an article in the mag on the virtual front porch and was in love! It was a chance to 'sit' with friends. I hunted up the web site and began my journey. I don't have a lot of friends close because of being so restricted to the house and not being able to be out for long. This site gives me a chance to chat with people who don't care if I can't come meet them somewhere all the time. I feel connected to people and love the people on here very much. It's become my second home!

hey laura-nice to meet you. i love mj's ideals- i think it's great to be able to connect with women who love the earth,dirt and manure just as much as i do. hope you will always be able to follow your dreams

Hey all. Also new to the MJF site but navigating the different forums and joining in on some swaps has given me a real sense of community. Hope to see all of you on different forums in the near future.

Hi, I have read Mary Janes's Farm magazine for a while now,Iam a grandmother of 5 who want's only to leave a legacy of all things wonderful and amazing to this 5. We live in Blaine Tn. in a red metal barn with a green metal roof a half mile of the main road.We have 2 horses 5 chickens 1 english springer spaniel,Isabelle. We have wonderful journeys of everything from art to gardening,living simply and peacefully This is the path I have choosen to follow.I find much comfort in knowing that I control a large part of my destiny and that we don't have to follow trends or the world to be successful and happy.Mostly on this Mother's Day eve I long to hear my Mothers voice one more time and I think of how I miss her. She passed on March 15,th after a lingering illness, trading places and taking care of her as she always had of me has made an incredible impact on who I now have become.Motherhood what an insight to the soul.Happy Mother'sDay to all!Sisterpig54

Welcome Laura to the farm. This forum is all about helping people and community but sooo much more. I consider it my family. The ladies are so friendly and helpful. I know you are going to love it here as I do.

Hi everyone! I grew up on a small dairy farm in northern VT. When my folks divorced we left to NH where there were farms all around us but not ours. I don't think I have ever had the farm life leave my veins. Now we live in north west WA state and are looking for a larger piece of property...where animals, etc will find their home! Love the unity i see here in MJF!

Hello everybody-
I spent a lot of time in Pennsylvania as a kid at my grandfather's he had a small orchard. I also spent time at my mother's college friend's farm.
My mother and I spent a lot of time canning when I was a child and now I am teaching my daughter.
I have just a few issues of the MJF magazine and love it! It has just fit into the values and skills I want to share with my daughter. It is the most inspiring publication. |

I discovered the Ideaboook through the book club I belong to (Crafters Choice). The title was appealing, so I added it to my order of knitting books, & was just gobsmacked when it arrived. I was living in a very ugly, prefabricated, un-community-like subdivision at the time and it was just what my soul needed. I found this forum soon after. (Now I am in a much happier, beautiful, nurturing place, thank goodness). I had been practicing (or at least trying) Farmgirl virtues in many ways, without knowing it. I just knew I did not have much in common with the shopaholic, fashion trend seeking, gadget-addicted, materialistic women I knew through work, etc. I'd spend weekends sewing and hanging out laundry and scouring yard sales for 1940s-era items, and on Monday what asked what I did over the weekend they would look at me like I had a few extra eyeballs growing out of my forehead.
I then bought 2 copies of the Ideabook as gifts for my mom and a close cousin. Mom in turn bought copies for her 5 sisters. I ordered the magazine budles (pre-subscription version) for myself & mom as gifts, & when Stitching Room & Outpost came out got those for me, mom and cousin too. Also have mag subs for me & mom; cousin got hers as soon as the first issue came our and beat me to the punch. I also order the bulk foods & apron patterns online & have a Sisterhood membership.
