My Dad called today to ask me about the menu for the Fourth! He's already deciding who will bring what and who all he's inviting. I think I'm gonna have to set it up for him and my DH will have to do the grillin. He is having surgery on his leg in June, so he wanted to confirm that we would stand in for him on that too. I'm ready to grill out! I already have two shelves in the freezer full of pre-pattied burgers, packs of hot dogs, and tons of cut up chicken. Come on warm, dry weather!

The fourth is just so "American folk day"! It's not too early to think about it. It's also the mary janes farm fair day.

The kids keep telling me the best 4th of July was the one before we moved to our current home. We went from living in the city to the country, but love it here too. We spent the entire day on our back deck, a table full of food, red and blue pop floats, homemade decorations, candles, night time fireworks, etc. We didn't work all day, just sat around the deck, played games, read books, ate good food and laughed a lot. I am praying that I can make this year's 4th special because our first year here wasn't too good.

July Fourths of years gone by were spent making homemade lemonaide, squeezing the lemons and such. Then we would make homemade icecream with a crank handled ice cream maker. We'd have to go to an old ice house and get a block of ice and watch the crusher, clank and make a most noisy noise crushing up the ice. Living in the deep south, those cold treats were so good. My dad,, a WWII veteren was always nostalgic about the fourth, as we all should be with the freedoms we enjoy! But as a little girl after eating the lemon homemade icecream I would get my red corduroy housecoat my aunt had made me and wrap up in it. Here it was 90 plus degrees!!! That day was a day of celebration! Smiles, Beth

I am taking my husband to his first rodeo. He grew up in Oregon his entire life without going to one so I told him we need to go. I'm looking forward to the food. LOL!

Our town is having their 125th celebration on the 4th. We have whole day planned starting with a community church service in the park with potluck, kids games and swimming in the pool, vintage silent movies at the movie theater, kids bike races, bike decorating contest, adult/kid wheel barrow race (adult is blind folded), 4th of July parade and ice cream social, free hot dog and watermelon feed, texting contest for the teens, construct-it with lego etc for kids, and last but not least fireworks. It may not seem like a lot but were are a town of just over 1,500 people. I think it should be a blast. Every church in town is involved, the police and sheriff dept are involved, and a lot of the civic groups too. Oh, I about left out the best part!!! Our Museum is having a historical scavenger hunt. Teams are a car load of people, they have clues, first team back with the 20 answers to clues win $125! I know our family is having a team. Let the fun begin!!!! |

Does anyone else remember the 4th of July in 1976? I was ten. We had just moved to CA. There was a huge community picnic in a park that I remember going to.

yes, i remember 1976...i was in my first year of college. anyway, everything was big Bicentennial and it was on the news all day. i remember watching gerald ford ringing the liberty in philadelphia..(we lived in new jersey and used to go to philly all the time) i think that's when they had "the tall ships" come into new york harbor too. oh, those good old-fashioned 4th of julys....our town up there had the big parade with free beer and rootbeer and hot dogs in the park after the parade....everyone went. when i was in high school, i marched in it----drill squad days: pom-poms and those boots!! but our uniforms were really made for football season which was cold and we roasted in them during the 4th of july parade. every fire department and rescue squad from miles around was there. one time there was a fire and the people had to quickly pick up their chairs, coolers, etc. so that a bunch of them could leave! |
