Hello everyone. I found MJ's magazine at Barnes and Noble and was intrigued by the recipes! (I make my own mix (so I can have whole wheat) and I'm always looking for ways to use it. Her mix is very intriguing to me, because of the baking soda thing, so once we get a bit more of that stuff called cash (sigh) I hope to place an order to try her mix.
I bought the book yesterday.. and I am enjoying reading it. My husband and I are trying to simplify our life, so I told him he needs to start looking at it too, because it just might become like our Simple Life Bible. :)
Co-workers like to call me Martha Stewart, but I must admit, I don't care much for that label. I just see it as doing what needs to be done, done better, and usually cheaper (but not always). I love to knit, cook (I am a chef, was a Licensed Vet Tech before this), garden and just kinda DO, if you know what I mean.
We don't live on a farm, although I hope one day we may be able to. Hubby grew up in Richmond, I grew up in Stuarts Draft (was a tiny farming community, now it's become industrial *BIG SIGH*), so getting him to move out to Louisa was my first step in converting him into the slower pace of life. Across the street it is zoned farm land, but our development isn't. I do need to check if I can have chickens though (Not just for eggs, but for tick removal) and I would love to have a goat (Not just as a pet, but for poison ivy removal *LOL*), I told hubby it'd be just like our pugs, but he's not going for it.
Anyway, I've enjoyed reading a lot of the old posts and I'm learning a lot. Ya'll are such great people!

Welcome Jennifer...you sound like fun!
Hey..goats are easier to clean up after than dogs...of course I tend to have BOTH and then some so I don't have that excuse for having them. Alot of places even in town allow a certain limit of hens...I hope you can get some. I just love chickens.
It will be fun to get to know you better here..I am glad you found us!

Hi Jennifer. Welcome to the forum. We had a goat when I was a child. His name was Alfie and my parents got him just for what you want one for- poison ivy removal. Unfortunately for Alfie, he felt it was his duty to be the "everything" remover, and the last straw came when he got in the house and ate my mom's dining room curtains!!
I know you will enjoy it here!

Thank you everyone for such a nice welcome!

And Michelle, I miss the mountains..they're only an hour away or so, but I am just so used to seeing them all the time that the little hills here just aren't the same.

I have a friend from here that moved down to Nashville, so one of these days I hope to make the trip to TN (before her wedding at least too).

Hello Jennifer,
I am a Virginia Farmgirl, too!(southern Chesapeake) I like the way you refer to MJ's book as your simple life bible. I feel the same way. I too used to get called Martha Stewart when I was in the office environment (glad thats over). I like to be able to make good use of things around me in the most economical way. It just makes good sense. I hate waste.
I love central and western Virginia. My mom and dad used to live in Lynchburg. I always loved the trip there. They were only a mile or so off the parkway. It was awesome but got too be too far out for them so they moved back down here. I really miss visiting there.
Are you near Southern Exposure Seed Exchange? They have a great selection of organic and heirloom seeds.
I wish the best with having animals where you are. They are such a blessing.
Hope to talk to you again soon.
Take Care,
Wendy
