Ok, while I was looking at the strawberry plants I noticed my 3 pear trees had a lot of black leaves on them. I looked closer and it looks like it's all the little limbs that had the flower buds on them, like they were all frost bit. I don't remember a frost lately. So I went ahead and pulled them all off. It looked really bad. They look better now with all that off. But I hope I did the right thing. Or should I have left them alone? I saw about 3 little bitty pears. I was so hoping I'd have some pears this year. But now it looks like I'll only get a few.

Does anyone else have pear trees and can give me some advice. They are going on their 4th year here. They are at the bottom of the yard and it gets quite wet when we get lots of rain. Maybe they are getting too much water? They are about 15' tall too. Help!

kris, you scared me when you said the bottom of the yard....is it the coldest spot. they sound frost bit. i thought you had a cold spell with the rain flood thing? that couldve done it. next year you can cover her for frost.we dug up the fruit trees that were low in the yard when we moved here. they were here before us. a white peach and apple. now only 100 feet away with lilacs for protection we get fruit. cold is like water. the molecules flow. it looks for the least resistance. location is key.if you could plant something above her it would help next year.since i moved from sb the tropics in ca. to the high desert. i had to learn tricks to growing in cold and short season.you can use arbors for partial walls for her. you can get creative. if the trunk gets to much warm to early she wants to wake up. some seasons thats not good. there are those like myself. when we are ready for the tree to kick start. i thump the trunk with something heavy but will not damage. it gets the juices flowing.i sure hope some of the fruit is still there and good. did you know you can put paper bags over your fruit while forming to keep bugs off. have fun in the garden today.happy gardening sherrye

it could be fire blight

OMG, what is fire blight and what should I do about it? I am not good with all these technical terms. Even though I took a year of landscaping. I learned about all these diseases but that's been quite awhile ago.

Sherrye, yes, the lowest part of the yard is where I planted these trees. They do get plenty of water for sure. But not all the time.

its not the water kris. its the air flow you need to look at.fire blight.kills back branches and blossoms on fruit trees so they appear as though burned by fire.it also produces cankers on stems and trunk.cutting out infection well below the canker is crutial.also break out any fruit spurs that look blighted.a dormant oil you can make and use in early spring and late fall. if this is it. then clean your hands and equiptment after. could be freeze or blight. if the tree is already leafed out completely it is too late for dormant oil as the name suggests.watch the tree for a while. do you have fruit not damaged? sherrye

There were a few little pears forming. There is also lots of new growth I forgot to mention. I just pulled it all of and threw it all on the ground. I guess I should go out and pick it all up now. Darn. Is there something I can put on them or around them now to help them?

yes. for the tree ...do you have algae seaweed? if so you can dilute it.strain through cloth so wont clog sprayer. put in sprayer. apply in morning before sun hits tree. when sun hits plants the surface area changes. in the night the pores so to speak on plants are open. so if you feed them leaf sprays before the sun moves them closed the plant takes it right in. major destresser for her.

if it is blight, you need to burn all infected leafs, branches, and fruit, the blight will get every tree if it is not contained, it will spread like wildfire. Good luck

The parts that were black were the small little branches about 5" long along the tops of the trees. I didn't notice any bumpa on the trunks.

i bet its frost. when mine branches here freeze rose or fruit. they turn really black. when you had your storm how cold at night? maybe with a wind chill it froze it. are the other trees right there and what do they look like. watch them. keep hands clean and tools just in case. just a thought sherrye
