We are planning (far, far in advance!!!) on getting a milk cow. I am thinking maybe a mini Jersey? I have no cattle here now, and I don't know a lot about them, but I will before we get one, lol!

Anyone else have a milk cow that they love??? What breed?

i love my mini jersey. she is sweet calm and quiet. all cows are great. jerseys have a special gene that makes their milk yellow with a very high butterfat. the guernsey and holstein are too big for me and my place. a cross is good. i think kris has one. i am still learning everyday.i picked up a rescue jersey normal size but a little smaller last year. she is doing great. will calve in aug. so looking forward to it. i read ALL the time about cows and goats. soaking up the info on here and kfc site. sherrye

THanks Sherrye,

I am leaning towards the mini-Jerseys, too. I knew they had a higher butterfat content (yum), so I bet the milk is great. I hope to find some local breeders to help me out! :0)

there seems to be a sweetness in my jersey that i see in goats too. she is endearing. she comes to me not me to her. she will fall asleep when i am rubbing her. she bathes me like a calf. so cute

Amanda, check out the new Countryside magazine. There is a whole section on getting a family cow. Lots of good advice and tells about the different breeds and also how to milk the cow. It's in the latest issue. Also Keeping a Family Cow forum is great. Everyone there has cows and milks and have lots of good advice. I go there when I am having a problem with mine.

I have always had a "Swiss Brown", I love them, they are as sweet as can be, great milk with high butterfat content, easy keepers, great Mama's, and anyone can handle them.

I LOVE Mona, my jersey milk cow. She is 6 now, and due to have her 4th calf in about 3 weeks. I can't find a single thing to complain about with her. She is perfect. I got her as a 2 year old pregnant heifer. Be sure to check out www.keepingafamilycow.com lots of awsome family cow advice and help.

Oh Jenny, I bet ya'll are so excited! I am too. I can't wait to hear about her when the time comes. I hope you will post pictures. I hope she has a beautiful little heifer calf too. What do ya'll do when she's dry?

Amanda, Jenny posted the link to family cow forum.

Definitely check out KFC... I have 2 Jerseys and a Holstein/Dutch Belted cross. I definitely prefer Jerseys, though! As already said, they're just so doggone sweet! And easier to handle...my Dutch cross is pretty large and headstrong (in more ways than one!) All of my girls are bred; due to calve in August, September, and January! I'll have 2 pure Jersey babies, and a Holstien/Dutch/Angus. I'm hoping for Jersey heifers and a bull cross. Fingers crossed!!! I won't know what to do in June...I'll only be milking 1! I may just have to take a vacation somewhere!!! Hm...
