Hi all you chicken lovers!
I'm curious as to what kind of chickens my farmgirl sisters own. I've always had heirloom breeds in the past...exotics or Bantams...my faves being Cochins and Silkies.
I was chickenless for 4 years. Next month I'll be getting baby chicks! I ordered a rare heirloom breed, Buckeyes - very dark red, medium in size, super friendly, mild mannered, very hardy, good free rangers. I've heard such wonderful things about them. I'm sooo excited. I decided to go with a one-breed flock this time. So, what kind do you have?

DH always pesters me about ordering just Rhode Island Reds or just black sex links......but I can't simply b/c there are so many beautiful breeds out there.
Our little venture started out with just 2 white silkies and has since mushroomed to include the above mentioned breeds, as well as Gold and white laced Wyandottes, Brahmas, Australorps, and the ever lovable Buff Orpingtons. Red star sex links are laying fools, so we have a few of these too
New additions this Spring are Auracaunas, red Polish and Delawares. DH is getting attached to the Polish. they are sweet
Our bantam flock took a beating, so in another month I hope to get a few more silkies and a couple Milliefleures.
We have had Dominiques but these were really skittish so they were rehomed.
Most breeds chosen were for egg laying hardiness and cold tolerance.
We do have pretty Blue Cochins, both standard and a docile pair of bantams but they lay really small eggs and are more for looks. The banty cochin rooster is so cute and a real pushover
Total flock ought to take us back into the upper 50s.
Each year what happens is, we go to the state fair, I take a pad of paper and paruse the poultry barn, and take notes on what we don't have and what would make a pretty addition to the menagerie.
This hobby has also turned into a collection!
And Shery, have you ever seen silkies that have barring like Dominiques?? A frind is working on her breed stock for her silkies. It's wild and I love it!! So hopefully when she gets some solid genetics, I'll be able to have at least one of these too |

I have one rhode island red and two that we are uncertion of. They were given to us by some friends. They had got these two littler chickens as chicks from a friend of a friend and were told they were maylays. I have looked maylays up online and these look nothing like the photos I have found. They both look different from each other as well. My DH says they are his little 'mutts'. He says they were probably from a mixed parentage and the people who gave them to our friends chose a breed they wouldn't likely be familiar with to call them. I don't know about where they came from, but they are mine now and I think they are cute.

Shery, I am hooked on the Buff Orpingtons. I love them. I have 12 hens and a roo. I also love the Welsummer. I will be getting more of them. I also have one lone Americana that I dearly love also. I have had Barred Rock and love them too. But right now am on a Buff kick. I will always have them.

I have Buff orpingtons,cochins,auruacanas [sp], americanas,naked necks,wyndots,barred rocks,well summers,marans,a variety of bantams,isa browns, california leghorns,white leghorns. I think that may cover it!

Shery, I wanted the heirloom breeds too, just like I am planting heirloom vegetables this year....our past is so important to us, and I hate to see good things go to extinction.
Anyway- I have 5 New Hampshire Red, 6 Buff Orpingtons, 5 Golden Laced Wyandottes, and 5 Barred Rocks. So far, I like all of them, they are very sweet and curious. At some point during the summer, we may get a few Jersey Giants. I don't like the idea of the cornish x for meat, we have 11 of those, and it is just sad to watch them.
I have also read that Freedom Rangers are good for meat.

Good for you, Shery!!! I have been considering Buckeyes myself. I would like to get a flock of a heritage breed, preferably one that is endangered/critical.
Right now, I have a 'rainbow flock': 2 Barred Plymouth Rock, 1 white plymouth rock, several Cochins (all colors), Red sex links, Buff Orp, Buff Plymouth Rock, 3 RIR, 2 White Leghorns, 2 frizzles, 4 Silkies. Plus, youngsters I have are 2 Lemon Blue Old English bantams, several Polish/Houdans, 1 Silkie, 2 Splash ???, 2 featherleg banty ???.
AND, I have about 35 Ameraucana/Easter Eggers in my new incubator :0p
Can you tell that I LOVE chickens???

I have approx 60 chickens right now
Just took 40 ameraucana outta the bator, going to start it again soon!

Cochins
Aracauna
Houdan
Polish
Pheonix
Hamburgs
Campines
and way too many roosters!
My favorites of the flock are the Cochins and Campines. Next year we may thin the flock a bit and add a few more Aracaunas, for their colorful eggs.
