I made morel mushrooms for dinner last night! What a treat! With the rain we got this weekend they are coming on strong! Hopefully I will harvest enough to dehydrate some for later.

Oh my, What state are you in? We are hoping to get the northern part of the lower penninsula of Michigan before morels come on there. Hope we haven't missed them.

I am in mid michigan about 60 miles north of Grand Rapids. They are just coming on strong here. We are usually about 2 weeks ahead of Mesick (the morel capitol of the US) The UP will be longer than that.

DO morels not ever grow in the lower part of the state? I've always heard of people going up north to hunt them.

We are trying to figure out where we're going to take our first camping trip of the year and I saw that Boyne City has a Morel Fest in May. Maybe we'll try to go camping that weekend up there. That would be fun. I don't even like mushrooms, but there must be something special about morels to make them so expensive, so I will probably be willing to try one LOL!

They don't taste like the normal mushroom...To me it's more like a meat flavor.

Siobhan, I lived in Ann Arbor for years and knew someone who could sometimes find them in the wild there. Not many and not even every year, but she did find some. So they do pop up farther south if you know where to find them and you can get out there at the right time to look!

Good Evening Siobhan,
I have a nephew who lives in Jackson and his yard has many old apple trees in it. He finds a few morels every year in his yard so I know they do grow in the southern part of the state. He and his dad always go north to hunt for a big mess of them though. Looks like we probably won't make it up there in time for them this year, but my brother said he would go check out the woods at our cabin in the next few days and see if he can find some. Next year we will make it up there earlier and hope we hit the motherlode.

keep searchin'-it's out there somewhere.

I need to go look outside in my yard, I think if they were to grow anywhere, this yard would be the place LOL!
