Here I am once again at a loss for knowing what to do. Phew!! This Mommy business is something else..lol

Charlie has had a thrush since he was born and we just can't kick it. We've done Nystatin, Gentician Violet, and Diflucan (which we found out he is severely allergic to). None of these helped much and now we are trying to give him cereal to push the yeast through his system. His tongue is so sore that he doesn't really like to make effort to eat. The thrush is both on his tongue and in his GI tract.

So.....having gone to Pediatrician route to no avail, I thought I'd pick you ladies brains to help me out once again.
Any thoughts on how we can kick this yucky mess for good??
Prayers and ideas would be most appreciated!!
hugs
Jessie :D

Jessie You have to be absolutely vigilant with the meds or they will not work. If the meds are every 4 hours then it has to be every 4 and exactly the amount prescribed. And anything that goes in his mouth must be sterilized, this means boiling nipples if you are using bottles, and pacifiers if he uses one or he will just reinfect himself.

Yes, what Kathy said, sterilize, sterilize, sterilize. Yeast is a sticky bugger and it's so hard to get rid of. If Im remembering correctly, he's a bit too young for yogurt, right? Plain yogurt is a great way to fight it off. And make sure that there is no sugar whatsoever in the cereal you're giving him. The yeast will feed off of it. If there is sugar in it, make your own cereal by just pulsing oats to a powder in the blender.

I'm wondering if you could give him some Hyland's teething tablets a bit before trying to feed him, if that would take the edge off of the pain on his tongue and help him to eat better.

Poor babe...I hope he's doing better soon. I'm assuming that you've got the thrush too? If so, plain yogurt and reducing the sugar in your diet will help you too.

oh that poor little baby. He must really be hurting. I am surprised that the meds haven't worked for him. I can sympathize with the little guy. I had shingles in my louth, on my tongue and down my throat. That hurt so badly and I am an adult. The girls all have good suggestions and numbing his mouth a bit should help him at least get his bottle down. Maybe a specialist could help more.

You didn't say whether you are nursing or bottle feeding. If you are nursing, you will need to be treated but I would have thought your doctor would have told you that. Since my daughters are grown now, I don't remember much about it, but one of them had thrush. I was breastfeeding and I had to stop for a few days and treat my nipples. Hope you soon find a solution.

Hi, I did a little research, found a note that unrefined coconut oil is good to relieve thrush. it also suggests that if breast feeding clean the nipples with apple cider vinegar after each feeding. it says to use coconut oil from the health food store that has no additives, non hydrogenated, says it's pretty expensive, but probably not more that doctor visits and medicines that don't help. hope little Charlie is feeling better soon. Jessie, I have not seen that you are giving him probiotics. get a good mix of probiotics and just open the capsule in his mouth- it has a slightly sweet taste so babies do not mind it. If this were my baby I would get some colostrum which is in capsules and liquid and you can get at a health food store (or from me) this product is made from bovine colostrum and you want it from a very healthy bovine. Then (an this is if he were my baby) I would buy the sweetner xylitol. I would dampen the nipple he nurses from and I would dip it in xylitol. and let him have it. Just like dipping it in sugar but in xylitol.

too much will give him loose stools but Xylitol kills yeast and it kills the bacteria that causes babies ear infections. It kills the bacteria that causes tooth decay. BUT it kills yeast too. They make gum and mints sweetened with this for this purpose but he is too young for that. I would dip the nipple in it and let that deliver to the gumms and mouth and throat area.
The colostrum will build his immune system and he did not get your colostrum.
