Last year I planted the peppermint exactly as I was told, barrier and such. This year, the mint has obviously broken the barrier and I have mint running amuck in the yard. Any ideas?

Good luck, mint is one of the most invasive plants there are. You have to get it all out, every speck of every root, or you can dry it out by not watering the entire area.

Enjoy the smell of mint while you mow? Mint is extremely aggressive. I am okay with it spreading so I plant it in ground. If you don't want it spreading I would only plant it in an area that is surrounded by side walks because it does seed very easily and the seeds spread just as aggressively as the root system does. I have some that is even growing under my porch where there is no sun and just taking sustanance from the rest of the plant that does get sun!
I have some chocolate mint that I planted in the openings in cinderblocks. That stuff made it across the yard in less than a year! I run my hands along the stems and pick every little itty bit out of my garden. The stuff that makes into the grass makes mowing pleasant. The ones that moved over to the fence get picked a couple of times a week to keep it out of the neighbors yard. I love mojitos so I don't care! I love the mint anyway.
