Ok! I tried buying locally, but its pretty much Ferry Morse or nothing! Looking for great seed companies, esp heirlooms. New to gardening... any suggestions?

Please take a look at Seed Savers Exchange. I order from them and it's all heirloom seeds. They have a huge selection of pretty much everything, good prices, and the shipping is cheaper than most. I recieved my seed in about a week and it was all very good seed. Everthing seems to be sprouting very nicely.

Baker Creek heirloom seeds is great. They have a web site you can order from.

Hey, I just noticed you're from Tn. How far from Chatt? We have a few places here that sell heirloom plants now. May 1st Sequatchie Cove Farms is having open house (or Farm) and they will be selling plants. Also Crabtree Farms sells them. Plus right up the road is a little farm called Pocket Farm and she sells heirloom plants too. I went yesterday and bought some cherry tomatoes and bell peppers. She also had herbs and other things. If you need directions let me know. I am going to Sequatchie Cove next Saturday. You can check out their site at www.sequatchiecovefarm.com. They about 40 miles north of Chatt. on 24 heading toward Nashville.

Almost forgot Botanical Interests seeds.

Seed Savers and Botanical Interests are both good companies. I use Seed Savers heirlooms for all my vegetable seeds and Botanicla Interests for all my herbs. I have had great luck with both!

Have you seen Totally Tomatoes? Hundreds of varieties of tomatoes and peppers, heirloom and not as well as some other stuff. Another interesting one is Vermont Bean Company. I agree that Baker Creek is wonderful too. I just got catalog for the first time this spring after hearing about it here.

Thanks for the info, everyone-- always learning! Next year I will be more mindful about the quality of my seeds. For now Im just so happy to have a garden!!!

Kristin, I am way on the western end of the state. I once had to make an emergency landing in an airplane in Chattanooga and thought it looked really cool. I just moved here from WI so havent gotten to fully explore yet.
