Do you wait to wash the eggs just prior to use? And when you wash them (if needed) what should we be using? Most of the time the eggs are clean because of the clean roosts. But sometimes they need cleaned. Thanks!

Kristina, I never wash my eggs unless there is poop or mud on them. But when I do need to wash them, I use warm soapy water and a scrubby brush. I use 7th Generation unscented so there is no scent just clean.

I do it just the same as Kristin. I try to keep fresh bedding (shavings) down so the eggs are most likely clean. In wet weather the hens get them muddy sometimes no matter what you do though. I usually use the dirty ones before any others (after washing of course) once you wash off the protective coating they don't last nearly as long in the fridge. Isn't this time of year great? My little hens are really cranking out the eggs right now!

Thanks! My daughter's science teacher was telling her that eggs should never be washed until used, but when gets chicken poo on it we had been washing it. I'll have to look for 7th heaven soap. Thanks a bunch! I love going out and getting my own eggs!
