Spring cleaning the basement I stumbled across a box full of black and white keys from an "ancient" piano we bought used many, many, many years ago. My husband refashioned the carved oak back part of the upright piano into a headboard for our bed, removed the piano keys and got rid of the rest.

I was wondering what I could do with these lovely bits of ivory and lovely black ebony keys....Any ideas? Anyone out there that does Scrimshaw? Ivory bookmarks comes to mind....

I don't know any crafty idea, but if you decide to swap a few or sell them. I need several to replace keys on my piano. =)

And... I would LOVE to see a picture of your headboard. What a creative idea!!

I've been picking up old copies of "Cape Cod Life" at a thrift store lately. A company is selling scrimshaw bookmarks made from old piano keys, with a hole at the top with a long tasseled cord. In 2003, they were $18. Frankly, I would prefer using a naked ivory bookmark.

I would love to have a few whites and blacks to add an accent to our 'music' wall in the living room if you'd be interested in letting a few go. Let me know if you'd like to swap for something or sell some. You could also use them to accent the front of a book shelf or trin a knick knack shelf with a piano key fence row acrossed the front.

Ladies...I will scrounge around in the basement and take a couple of photo's to post on my blog. I would have to send the keys as they are---for fear of chipping the ivory trying to get it off the key. How about 2.00 bucks a key? Send me a check or money order the amount of keys you need your address and I will post them in a bubble envelope. How does that sound?

Angela...I took the keys out to examine them and they are really long! Would it be alright to cut the key up to the point where the ivory begins----including the skinny long part of the key--it would be easier to ship. Let me know how you want the keys.

They really are lovely and the ebony ones are just as lovely---some of those just snap (in one complete piece) right off the key, is that how you want it sent? Please advise.

Melody, I need an "F" and a "D" key. All I need is the flat part of the ivory so cutting it off where the ivory begins is ok with me. If any are loose even better to pop them off. If you e-mail me your address I will send you a check.

Melody,
I would love to have a few for accents around my piano. I AM A PIANIST . . . a "mean" one at that.
I would like 3 white and 3 black . . .and cutting them off at the end of the ivory is all right with me.

Since you just gave me your address for the "Guess My Maiden Name" . . .I'll enclose a check with your little "Runner-up" gift if that's okay. Does your $2/key cover shipping?

THANKS!
CJ

Since I will be cutting the keys down to the ivory and the ebony part I should be able to stuff these nicely into a bubble envelope.

I am requesting $2.00 for a flat shipping fee and for the keys themselves $2.00 each.

Sound okay??

Melody,
Your check is going out today in your LITTLE "Guess My Maiden Name" package.

I learned to play piano on a Steinway piano my mom had (started learning before I started school). I had that same piano in my house when our house burned down in July 1994 . . .so it was an antique and had real ivory on the keys. LOST THE HOUSE!!! LOST THE PIANO!!!
I purchased a new professional model Steinway upright later that year which is the piano I have now, but, unless you special order them and pay big bucks . . they don't use real ivory anymore on piano keys.
So, it'll be a treat to have just a few for fun . . and whatever decorative use I can find for them.
THANKS!!!
CJ

Oh my gosh CJ....

I saw my first Steinway at a concert many years ago---I never knew how beautiful a piano could look and sound up front and personal like that. I will never forget that experience and I am sorry you lost yours in a fire.

The ivory keys that I am sending you came from an antique upright. I have a picture of the headboard we now use that was salvaged from it posted on my blog.

I will get them out to you right away.

Thank you girlfriend!
