I just have to say, dear farmgirls, that Swiffer cloths never cease to amaze me. I'm always so surprised by the amount of dust and crumbs they pick up, even after I've swept and vacuumed!
I'm thinking of buying one of those swiffer hand dusters too. Has anyone tried one? Do they work well?

They do work. Especially in the hand of a very sleepy teenager! Mindless, yet effective! I also love the Mr. Clean magic erasers. Makes my life much easier. Karin |

I am swiffer fanantic. My daughter, too. I always hope that for some reason I am not being organically incorrect in using them, because they really work and a lot of dirt disappears after I use them!

Sorry hit the wrong button and sent my message.....(obviously not a computer person) As I was saying....if you are concerned about the throw away swiffers then get a microfiber cloth. They are pricey but last forever and they hold a large amount of dust and you wash them. I've had mine for about 10 yrs. It was well worth the price.
sorry about the 2-part message, Teddie |

Well guess I didn't send the first part of the message. LOL LOL Not important now. I'm terrible at this stuff. This is bad since DH is a programmer and son is a network administrator.
Sorry again, Back to dusting...that I know about..LOL...Teddie :) |

I'll have to try the swiffer. I have all hardwood and lino floors and get tons of dust dirt and animal hair daily. I have a wet/dry vac but it's not handy for daily clean up. |

I keep a box of Swiffer cloths in the car, under the passenger seat. If I have to wait in line in a bank or restaurant drive up, I whip out a Swiffer and dust the interior of the car as far as I can reach.

Lucinda, that's such a good idea! Everytime I get into my car I look at the dust and think it's just one more thing I need to do.

It is depressing to have a dusty car, isn't it? I am not a "cleaning freak" by any stretch but I think I notice that car dust more than any other mess. Maybe because it is literally right in front of me!

So the swiffers really work good? I've been considering trying them. I hate to dust like I'm sure all of you do so anything to make it easier or better. I'm afraid I don't dust like I used to. I don't have wood floors but the hand one sounds like a winner.

I like the Swiffer tool, but I don't use the packaged chemical-treated cloths. I just buy a package of dozen white washcloths at the dollar store for a few bucks and use those. I wet them with water and vinegar, fold them in half, and push their corners into the little holes that the Swiffer sheets are supposed to fit into. They have more "bite," so they clean better, and I can just throw them in the wash when I'm done. A package of these washcloths lasts me well over a year. |

Oh my gosh - that is a great idea! I quit using the Pledge dry dust cloths for sweeping as it was so expensive with all the dog hair and dirt that comes in, so went back to sweeping, but still use them for dusting the furniture. I use the wet pledge mop cloths for mopping - but I will try this - sounds like a great solution - thanks! |

I love my swiffer, too! My Dad gave me mine after he and my Mom received one as a gift. He got so excited he swiffered all over my own kitchen floor to demonstrate it on the day he brought it to me. (Embarrassing, I had vacummed and he still got some dirt to show up on the cloth!)
I keep it in the bathroom so as to sweep up all the hair I shed daily on the linoleum. This can be done quietly without waking the household in the early hours; quieter than the Dustbuster that I used to have to use. It just stays in the corner behind the door and gets used for a few days then I throw out the dirty cloth and replace it. I love Rosemary's tip about using those washcloths. Excellent!
Hmmm...I was trying to barter away lots of cloth napkins with matching placemats; maybe I have found a use for the napkins...as "fancy" swiffer cloths! Naah, I still want to barter!

I love the Magic Eraser! And I use the Swiffer wet cloths in my bathroom. It is such a tiny space that seems to always have hair, hay chaff, and dust and I don't want to get the bucket and mop out. Just pop that wet cloth on, swipe away, and throw it in the trash!

Rosemary - I tried the regular dustcloth on my Swiffer this weekend...terrific. Why did I never think of that? Sorry, swifer refills...I am off to the dollar store for more white cotton washcloths! I was amazed at how the hair even flicked off the cloth when I removed it from the Swiffer - Sweet!

Ok, I love my swiffer wet jet for quick clean-ups, but truth be told I don't care for the dusters. I think my lambswool duster works much better.

Rosemary,
Yes, I LOVE saving money and I do agree they clean better, too! Thanks for that tip. You use vinegar and water for floors, what about hardwood floors? Our son "helped us out" a few years back by dusting the hardwood floors in the hallway with my dustmop and a can of Pledge ... DH almost took a header when he walked down the hall after work, in his socks....so, what works on wood floors without making them slippery? Same son also handwashed dishes, neglected to rinse the soap from the glasses and we had bubbles in our iced tea that night! Years ago, but still great memories!
BTW, Rosemary ... whereabouts in Virginia are you located?

Well, Jo, I live in the part of Virginia where it takes half a year to check messages! ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif)
I'm in Midland, in Fauquier COunty. That's about 50 miles west of Washington DC. Georgann has suggested a VA Farmgirls meetup. Did you see the thread she started on that a day or two ago? I think it would be great fun to meet, don't you? Please let her hear from you if you're up for it. |

I love Magic Eraser and the lambswool duster... but find I use too many swiffer re-fills which are pricy. Woodstove+fan=dust, so I go through 2 swiffers every time I dust the house. What I do like is a dampened teeshirt (ripped into 2 or 3 cloths), so maybe that would work in the holder... nice!

Sandyb, not to change the subject from swiffers, but I so want your book. I want to make quilts and your book looks wonderful, and oh so romantical! I will order one for sure. Now as far as swiffers, I haven't used them, but they sound great. The magic erasers are great too. My friend uses them in her shower. She cleans the shower first them she uses the eraser to get off the soap scum, she says it works.
