I own several pairs of garden gloves, some that were lovely gifts, but every time I go out to weed, at some point in the process I end up shedding my gloves so I can feel the dirt better. I end up looking like an urchin all year because my hands never get all the dirt out of them - I try to think of it as a farmgirl accessory:) Today was a good day because I got my hands dirty! Does anybody else garden barehanded? Amy Grace

My husband has actually had guys on the fire dept point at my hands and tell him he had a good woman. When he asked what they meant, they said I carried the signs of a hard worker. I wear my dirt as a badge of honor!

This will be the first year in a while that I will actually be able to go barehanded safely. Last two gardens I've had, I was preggo and we had stray cats around our house who would use my freshly tilled garden as a litterbox before I could plant, so I always had to be extra careful when working in the soil. But this year, we're in a new catless place and I am not preggo, so there's nothing to worry about. I love to get my hands dirty!!!

Amy Grace, me too. I like to start with the gloves like for weeding if I know I'll get really dirty. Then before too long they are off. I like to plant barehanded. I just can't feel stuff with gloves on. I wish I had some on the other day when I was moving some pine branches though. Sap all over.

My hands are very small, so I have trouble finding gloves to fit. Even "smalls" are too large in the finger length, so it's moot. I do wear them for pruning these two rose bushes I have, though...they are the THORNIEST bushes ever, moreso than any other roses I have.
And, I really don't have nails that I care about (I trim them close) so I just dig in with bare hands.

I rareley wear gloves. I always have some...somewhere. I am likely to use them for heavy duty weed pulling (like in August..haha) or using a post hole digger or other big tool but thats aboutit..My hands always look awful..but I have learned to accept that.

... a delightful tip for keeping under your nails cleaner! scrape your finger nails across some soap. leave the soap under the nails and when its time to clean up.. wash away the soap, cleaner nails!

Karrieann - I am going to try that right this second, I'm going out to weed as it has not yet started delivering the rain that was called for. I do wear gloves for the heavy duty stuff too, like pruning roses, but the rest of the time.....Oh well, I never expected I would be a hand model:)

I think it is something sensual about the feel of the dirt on our hands. I usually have gloves with me in the garden for the occasional thistle, but I agree that you can't get a grip on little weeds, or safely handle delicate plants to set out. Gardening with gloves is a little like taking a shower with a raincoat!

My husband fussed at me goodnaturedly yesterday for doing the exact same thing. I was only going to pull one weed, but then... before you know it, I'm weeding away. I say, a little dirt never hurt anyone! :)

Yup . . me too!! I do wear gloves when I'm cleaning all the old stuff out of my flower beds because it's dry and sticker-y.
But when I plant or work in my vegetable garden it's barehanded . . .feel the dirt, push it around the seeds/plants. I weed barehanded too, especially when the weeds are very small . . .can't get a grip on them otherwise and I don't want to get the plants too.
Like to feel it!!! I garden barefoot as well . . . oh my!!! Have to do a foot soak frequently with my foot brush, to get then clean so I can be presentable. But a foot soak sure feels good!!!!

I garden barehanded and barefoot :). I need to feel the soil with both my hands and my feet, I suppose!

I might as well garden barefoot - I wear garden clogs and my feet get filthy! My husband just laughs at me in the summer. It is still a little chilly here for taking off the shoes yet, although the forecast is for a beautiful spring day. Amy Grace

... My hubby just shakes his head at me when I go barefooting in the yard. He figured that I should have learned my lesson after stepping on an innocent bee. I feared that I set as a bad example of wearing shoes for my girls while they were growing up.. and it has passed onto my Lil Angels too. It seems we all prefer to bare our soles! heehehehee!

I have always gardened bare handed. I too have hands that gloves don't seem to fit-I even tried kids gloves but they are not a good fit either. I keep my nails trimmed so there isn't tooooo much dirt under them but most times I have a brush that I have to use to get them clean! Nail polish & manicures-NO just give me some dirt for my hands!!!

all you barehanded happy garden girls: don't forget your tetanus shot. It is a soil borne disease and can cause major illness. I ripped open a long jagged spot/wound on my knee a couple years ago, stepping over a piece of rusted rebar, which was holding up a sprinkler head, and the doctor was furious when she found out that I, as, a repeat and devoted gardener, I was not up on my tetanus shot. Get one now. Thanks.

Thanks for the reminder Mary Ann. Got mine 7 years ago. My best friend gave it to me after I stuck a metal yard decoration into my cheek trying to relocate it. KNEW it was going to happen, but thought, "naw, I'll just loosen it a little, then I'll lean back and really pull"
Needless to say, I was barefoot and dirty pawed as well! I hate shoes! I take 'em off as I walk out of school to head home! I try to wear gloves and Crocs or clogs, but they always end up under the garden swing or the picnic table. Plus, it's easier to run through the sprinkler barefoot!

I'm a glove person. LOL. I don't mind the dirt getting on me, or under my nails, it's the little critters I do not want touching me. LOL. Marly
