Hi everyone,
I didn't know where to post this, so this was a good a place as any.
Does anyone know of a way to treat wool items so they won't be itchy? I have a fantastic 100% wool sweater that I tried to wear this winter, and I couldn't, because it drove me insane! Is there something I can wash it in? Spray on it? Soak it in something?
Or conversely, is there something I can put on my skin to make me less sensitive to wool?
Thanks. -Cat |

It really depends on the wool the sweater was knitted from how itchy it is. Some wool is incredibly soft and other is scratchy. I dont' think there is much you can do short of wearing a thin turtleneck under it. My mom has the same problem. Some folks are much more sensitive to the scratchy kind.

When the commercial companys make yarn, the wool is all chopped, bleached, and made pretty harsh then they spin it up into yarn. So that is why most people think they are allergic to wool. With handspun yarn the fiber is all going the same way and is a longer fiber, not chopped up. I cant wear sweaters from the store, they drive me crazy itching, whereas my handspun yarn does not do that, I dont know of anything that you could do to make it softer. As Jenny said a turtleneck under it might work, but I have also found sometimes it itches right through the turtleneck too sorry that there is not to much you can do with it shirley |

Catherine, Try wearing a silk undershirt under it - I know they make silk winter underwear - the silk might keep the little fibers from sticking your skin. Hope this helps! Rosie |

I like wool,... but if it ever touches my skin I itch and break out. However I found if I wear another fabric next to my skin so the wool can't touch I do not itch. The silk underwear works and feels soooo good but is pricey. Cotton underwear/turtlenecks also works really well. Good luck, Teddie |

Have you tried a bit of liquid fabric softener in the rinse water? Before you give it away to your arch-nemesis you might try that! ;) Otherwise the soft t-shirt underneath might do the trick. Rhonda
