... I inherited my Great Aunt's pleater machine. I am sooooooooo honored to have this because she has made beautiful hand-smocked dresses for my girls when they were little and I kept those dresses. I passed them on to one of my daughter who has my Lil Angels! I have already made a cute top for one of my Lil Angel. Now, I am dabbling it again, the smocking, I have exhausted the internet searching for pattern, "plates" for more stitching designs. I have found basically two... but I want more. Unfortunately I found many for cost.
If any of you have or do english smocking... what would you recommend that I get? a book?.. I would love the magazine of Autralian Smocking.. but it is sooooo costly... any suggestion?

Can you get copies of Sew Beautiful Mag from your library? Martha Pullen always has lots of smocking patterns in her magazines.

Hey Karrieann!!
I have a pleater, and some patterns and design plates!
I learned how to smock way back in the early 90's when my girls were little, and my husband surprised me with a pleater!
I made many, many smocked dresses for my girls!
I have been trying to keep what I have in the hopes that my girls would make smocked clothes for their little ones, but so far they aren't interested.
I think I have things that I can copy for you...
I could send them out with the (much delayed) cancelled stamps.

Karrieann I have some books I got on here what is the Pleater machine?? I love the look of smocking and have done 1 piece but would love to get good at it..

The Pullen Pleater(r) A Machine Used for Gathering Pleats for English Smocking 16 rows of perfect pleats 21 1/2 space rows 1/2 space rows eliminate that guessing how to eyeball the half spaces in waves, etc. Helps to make a Perfection smocker out of a beginning smocker Wonderful for smocking teachers who hear constantly, I just can't seem to be able to guess where this half space stitch goes. Offers an added service to shops who can now say Would whole spaces be enough or would you like half spaces also? Large turning handle Engineering by space scientists in Huntsville, AL Wonderful for miniature smocking - dolls and babies!
..of course there are other styles.
It really is a dream to have something simple as this to make the pleats for you!

The book A to Z of Smocking is a wonderful book!!! published by the Australian Smocking magazine. I have found it really helpful since I am teaching myself

Karrieann,
What beautiful work you do,your smocking is so intricate. I love to do embroidery and was just recently thinking of learning to smock. My Grandmother did smocking,but just simple stuff. Instead of pleating and marking she usually did it on gingham using the squares as her markers. Unless there is an easier way I think I'll start there with just a regular ole stitch. How lucky you are to have inheirated a pleater.
As someone mentioned Sew Beautiful always has lots of patterns. good luck finding some patterns

I smock all the time. Have for over 24 years.
I have three daughters all have trunks full of hand smocked dresses. now I have two granddaughters and I make them each a outfit per season or event. check out my blog for some of the projects I have completed recently.
My favourite magazine although expensive is Australian Smocking and needlework by countrybunkins. I have about 20 of them now and will not buy anymore. A lot of my smocking plates are my own version of what I see out there.
I am excited to see your smocking and someone to share the joy of it with.
