I grew up with fresh mozarella cheese, and I have been so excited to be able to buy it the last few years in my grocery store.
I would love to make my own, and have a recipe to try, but where would I find rennet and citric acid? I would like to get it locally if I can, rather than order it online.
Thanks!

Hey Brenda I get all my cheese making supplies from the New England Cheesemaking Supply Company. I have had very good luck with them. They also have a newletter that is really good that you can get via email. Here's the website.

Brenda, I've gotten stuff from New England Cheesemaking Supply Company before also. In fact, I'm planning to order rennet again from them soon. If you can't find it locally, let me know. If it's not an issue of time, and more that you don't like putting your information out there online, maybe you could combine your order with mine.

Brenda, if you have a 7th Day Adventist store in your area, they have the veggie rennet. Also try Hoagger Goat Supply. They have all cheese making supplies. But the NECSC would be closer to you. I want to start making chhese again. All my goats have kidded so I'll be swimming in goat milk soon. Have fun!

Wow, thanks for all your help!
Amie lives near me and is she is ordering it, it must be hard to find around here....
I don't mind ordering it from NECSC, I just bookmarked their website, looks great!
Amie- we really have to plan on meeting each other soon! :) Do you make a lot of cheese? I wouldn't mind combining orders!

I haven't made a ton of cheese. I tried it several years ago, with a recipe that I got from the Genesee Country Museum. It was delicious! Lately I've been making the soft cheese spread from MJF Magazine, and that got me interested in trying the pressed cheese again.

Brenda, I honestly never even thought about looking for rennet at a health food store. The GCVM recommended New England Cheesemaking to me, so that's where I ordered. But if you do find a local source, let me know! I'm probably going to place my order next week.

Brenda, do you go to the Springlake Fabric shop (I'm not sure if it's still there, used to be a great fabric store run by a mennonite family/families?) out by Wolcott? They used to have tons of specialty stuff, and do-it-yourself type stuff--not sure if cheesemaking supplies, but it was a very neat store.

I purchase mine at the Amish Grocery or the local health food store! Making cheese is so great, you will never want to buy it again.

Amie- There's a health food store up on Route 104 in Ontario, about 25 minutes from me. I have to go into Tractor Supply this week, so will stop there. I'll let you know if they have it!

Sheila- I was just there this morning!!! I go there all the time! Today I went for fabric and raw sugar, but never even thought that they might have it.... did you grow up around here?

Brenda, I grew up in Williamson, and my Grandma and Grandpa live in Shaker Heights in North Rose, went to church in North Rose, etc etc My dad was a Kodak man :) when Kodak was great. SO, yes, I'm VERY familiar with that area, though I haven't been there for several years now. My parents live down in the finger lakes area now, in Canadice. So we are down south there when we come visiting. So where is the health foods store in Ontario, on 104? Is it the one that used to be up on Ridge Road, what was it called, ummm... I think the Root Cellar? or something like that

I get citric acid from a bulk food store. I have seen it in grocery stores, by canning stuff. Rennet I get from Hoeggers.
