Well I got the first burn pile done, the big one. I will have to do at least one more - this just for the tall weeds that took over the end of the garden space that wasn't actually cultivated last year. I got them all pulled yesterday and you can actually see that, yes, there will be a garden - makes me feel better.
Although I guess I should come with a warning label - I burned my finger Thursday on a tomato cage that turned out to be at the bottom of the burn pile, not sure how it got there and I didn't discover it till everything had burned down. I sprayed it down with water but hadn't sprayed long enough before I grabbed it.
Then yesterday a sliver of grass jammed itself into my palm - really deep. Who knew grass could act like wood or metal? I guess I have really tough grass - no wonder it won't just give up and go away and let me have a garden:)

Oh my gosh Amy Grace! Becareful!

Our yard and garden are slowly taking shape too. I have about 1/2 to 3/4 dug up and turned over in the garden. Next weekend I will be planting a few things.

I need to buy or borrow a good saw from my dad to trim some sucker branched off the stump of a tree that was cut long before we moved in. Right now there are probably 100 branches sticking straight out! I am going to cut all the way through the nodes at the stump and then put some tar over the cut to discourage regrowth in that area. Hopefully the tree will put the energy into growing through the secondary.

I also have a burn pile but I am not sure if the city will let me burn it in town. So I am thinking of buying a outdoor fire pit so I can burn up the woodpile legally in town!

The ironic thing about my injuries is that I grew up with a father who is the epitomy of common sense/be prepared/boy scout ethics. And I know should know better.....Oh well, that same father has done such things as cut into a log harboring a hive of bees with a chainsaw - and he is allergic to bees, and, with the same chainsaw, accidentally cut into his leg. Moral is - accidents happen. But be careful/prepared.

Amy Grace:
I hope your finger is better! My husband has done that once; reached into the burn pile he thought had cooled off, but didn't. He had a burn on his fingers. Our burn pile is in the garden! The seeds are sprouting, but the cats are leaving their prints all over. My dh was upset about that but I said it must have been the coyotes! LOL.
Happy gardening!

Remarkably the burn wasn't too bad - it helped that I was holding the hose in my other hand when I did it so I got cold water on it instantly:)
Cats....is there a way to keep them out of the garden? I wish I knew

I just read that ground up orange peels and cayenne pepper sprinkled around a garden wards off cats. No idea if it works but it was listed in the gooseberry garden cookbook.

Anything is worth a shot - we live on a hillside with lots of neighbor cats and stray cats and they just loooove fresh dug dirt.
