Last week (or so) I posted about finding my old horse lying dead in his paddock. It was sad, but he was old, and had a great, loooong life.
Two days ago I lost my OTTTB, Major, to colic, very suddenly. He was 5 years old. I am so crushed.
We rescue ex racehorses and re home them; but this was one I had chosen to keep as my own personal horse. I ride hunter jumper and was looking forward to showing him this season.
I was also looking forward to eventing him, after I took him to a eventing clinic and he proved himself to be quite adept at this sport.
And now he is gone, and I am devastated. My sister, who rode and loved him as well, is crushed. I mean, this feels like loosing a family member.
I have lost several old horses and that is quite sad.
But loosing a promising 5 year old so suddenly is just miserable.

How horrible to lose one so young. I lost one of my sheep unexpectedly just a few weeks ago without any rhyme or reason either. It's so hard to lose a 4 legged member of the family. You have my sympathies for sure.
Blessings, Sheri

Dear Hosanna, I have lost many beloved animals too, including my husband's packing/ trail horse to a sudden colic. Not only that, but my first husband died in his sleep on Mother's Day, 2005. I have had a lot of support for my grief, and have done some Hospice work too as a caregiver. Please know that we all have a time to go, and when that time comes, nothing can be done to change it. I'm a midwife, and I tell all my clients that some of us live 6 weeks in the womb, and some of us live 100 yrs outside it. We never know who is who in the beginning, and so often, we do not know why. Of course, thse concepts may not lessen the pain you are feeling. It is TRULY tragic when someone who is talented lives only a short while and does not get to express the full talent. My husband was that way, dying at 33. When the one who dies is young, we ask WHy Why WHy. Death is a mystery, and I have come to accpet that I may never know why. Doors and windows open and close, to the one who passes, and the ones who remain. We all have our own spiritual beliefs about life and death. It is so sad that Major was only just beginning a prospective career and with you at the reins. For some reason, just reaching that point of promise was exactly what Major somehow needed to experience before crossing over. If it had been meant to be any other way, it would have been that other way. So, So, sad to have our hopes dashed and have to say goodbye. How wonderful that you and Major formed a bond. The strength you gain will serve you well in another place and time in your own life, or when it comes time for you to comfort another person. Getting through is the hard part- Mary LD

First, let me say I am sorry for your loss, Hosanna. We don't own horses, but many of friends do and they are just big pets--each has its own personality and despite their size they are very cuddly. We have lost many pets in death and it is always hard. Only pet lovers understand. Second, Mary LD, I am your pincushion sister and although you told me a bit about your life I had no idea how or when your first husband died. I am so sorry for your loss as well. Your words to Hosanna are so comforting. I think of you often. Dianne

Thank you, Mary. You are so right. (BTW, my mom is a midwife also. She started in Florida almost 40 years ago. Today she is the longest-practicing midwife in North Carolina; I think.) I have lost a lot of pets, and horses, too. This time it just hit me so hard. I know there is some reason; some plan - even if I don't know what that is yet. Thank you for those words.

Hosanna, you have my deepest sympathy. I don't know if you know the story of the Rainbow Bridge but I find it a very comforting story. I have lost many pets and held several horses while their heart stopped beating. They are waiting for you to join them.

Hosanna I am very sorry for these losses. I was going to post about the Rainbow Bridge as well, but Beth beat me to it. You are doing amazing things for animals and their time on Earth is better having been spent with you. What a blessing you are! So sorry, sweetie.

Hi Hosanna.
I am so sorry to hear about your losses. How doubly hard. We lost two beloved, elderly dogs last year within four months of each other. It is always so heartbreaking. HUGS and more HUGS to you.

Dear Hosanna, Thank you for liking my post, and thank you to the others who posted as well. I was a tad afraid it would not seem comforting. Again, I am sorry for your loss. It takes a while for the heart to catch up with things our mind may or may not understand. I read something about grief a few years back. It said that there is a culture that gives the bereaved a vessel of some sort to hold the grief- becuase it is too big for us to hold on our own. I just remembered that. When someone loses a beloved person or animal, we can light a candle to honor that lost one's life, and set out a cup to hold the grief. I will do that for you tonight. Mary LD
