Just wanted to pass on a little tid-bit a elderly lady told me about fig trees. She has a huge tree growing right outside her door and I questioned her as to how her fig tree had gotten so big her answer was.... carrot juice. She blends up carrots in the blender and pours the juice on the roots. So guess what the first tree I'd like to purchase for the new house? Yep you guessed it a fig! Blessings,Karen

Hey Karen. I love fig trees. And figs, too. When we bought this place there was an old fig tree out by the well house. It never got any sun because of a very big hachberry tree. Well, the tree was cut down last fall and they also cut the fig tree, too! I didn't know they did that til later. I hope it comes back now. I'll have to try the carrot juice. Thanks.

This also reminds me of a story about a lady's lilac buch at her back door. It was huge and someone asked her how it got so big. She said she threw her dish water out on it every day.

Glad to see you back on! I hope you get a few fig trees for your new home.

My mom has 2 huge fig trees. If I had the $, I'd build a big screened cover over them because by the time the squirrels, birds and deer are done there's hardly a handful left.

One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt."

Kristin... It will grow back... like gang busters! When we bought this home of ours, it came with 8 fig bushes/ trees. I keep cutting some down and they'reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee back again and again and again.

An old lady told me about dumping her coffee grounds on her lilacs to make them big!

I am so jealous of you southern girls and your fig trees. There is one type of fig I can grow here but I understand that taking care of it is like taking care of a child. Fall and winter require very special wrapping, trimming, packing. It seems like a lot for a handful of figs five years from now.

Kerrieann, I just went out there and looked at it. They cut it down to the ground. And I also let the goats out in the back yard. They may be having a salad on the way by because there ain't nothin' on that brown wood. But it may still be early for it, too. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Kristen... fence it off, maybe.. to keep goats away.. they'll (the figs) will shoot up "sucker" type of branches all around the first trunk ... they're good too. Hoping for yours to be like mine!

Oh Karen,
I sooo miss my fig tree that I grew from a little seedling that came up errent in our yard..., I keep it in a pot till we moved to Moorpark, CA...and once it was a few feet tall I planted it in our front yard, by the time we moved (10years later) it was about 8'tall and producing figs like crazy.
It was the smooth trunk tree w/purple figs...I have an uncle in Biola (near Fresno) Calif...and he has a small orchard of old figs (both smooth and bumpy type trunks)& pomagranets...neither my uncle nor I ever fussed over our trees, just watered them & enjoyed the fruit. I wonder what it is about the carrots that give the fig tree of your elderly neighbor...sounds interesting and certainly worth a try.
Unfortunately Fig trees won't grow up here...bummer!
p.s. as a kid on my uncles farm, us kids would pick the figs, & use the sticky milk to write on our skin...who knows why, we were just goofey kids and did silly things....lol!
Thanx for sharing the tid bit with us.
